Bill I've spun my geographical wheel for the October Group reads and it's fallen on Ireland. I'm going to include Northern Ireland in this as well. So for October, our Around the World Challenge will be mysteries/ thrillers/ Spy novels set in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England or the surrounding islands.

To help you along, here are some examples of authors who set their books in these areas for you to consider (but not limited too)

1. Jacqueline Winspear (Maisie Dodds series)
2. R.D. Wingfield (Inspector Frost)
3. Minette Walters (standalones)
4. Charles Todd (Inspector Rutledge)
5. Michelle Spring (Lara Principal)
6. Jonathan Gash (Lovejoy)
7. Ann Cleeves (various series)
8. Simon Brett (various series)
9. Ken Bruen (various)
10. Tana French (Dublin Murder Squad)

so many to choose from. I will use this geographical area more than once, I'm sure.

Don't these names limit you, there are many others. It was provided to give you some ideas and to whet your appetite for books set in the region.

The usual rules apply:
1. don't nominate your own book
2. if you nominate a book and it wins the poll vote, you are de facto discussion leader
3. please don't nominate a book we've read in the last 3 to 4 years (if you're not sure, I've added the link to the group's bookshelf).

I look forward to seeing what's nominated.

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 702 comments I nominate The Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty, set in Northern Ireland during "the troubles" in the 1980's. First in a series of six featuring DS Sean Duffy.

I've only read the first so far but I've got two or three more on my shelf.

I’ve read the whole series - absolutely loved it.

Bill Nike wrote: "I nominate The Shape of Snakes by Minette Walters"

Such a great mystery writer. One of the few of her books I've not yet read.

A very good choice - this is one of my favourite Minette Walters.

CBRetriever | 2552 comments Stuart Neville's Ghosts of Belfast (US name) or The Twelve (UK name) is also pretty good in that it's about a man haunted by the ghosts of 12 people he killed. If you're looking for more of a mystery, book two in the series Collusion would work as it's more of a police procedural.

Bill Going back to 1955 for my selection. Might as well get in on the nomination act

The Paton Street Case by John Bingham The Paton Street Case by John Bingham

I like the Jack Taylor tv series and have been meaning to read this.

Bill I'll be setting the poll up on the 10th, so a couple of more days for nominations. Great ones so far.

message 22: by Bill (new)

Bill The poll is now up and will be open until 15 Sep. You can find it on the poll page or at this link

message 23: by Bill (new)

Bill The two selections for our October read are

- The Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty (nominated by Suzy) &

- The Ghosts of Belfast by Stuart Neville (nominated by CBRetriever)

Congrats. Please confirm with me that you're able to moderate the threads. I'll make sure they are set up 1 Oct. Thanks for nominating them

message 24: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 2552 comments I'll be there and you might want to indicate either in the title or in the text of the first post that The Ghosts of Belfast (US Name) is called The Twelve UK/Ireland name).

I'm not sure what it's called in other countries but on amazon.fr, it's sold under both names in hardcopy and as The Twelve in Kindle format (ditto for amazon.de).

If that's not possible for the title, I'll mention it in my first post as I don't want people to think they can't find it in the EU.

message 25: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 2552 comments and this is a first for me as I'll be rereading both books this month (I love both authors)

message 26: by Suzy (new)

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 702 comments Yes, you can count on me to moderate the discussion for Cold, Cold Ground. Excited to read this as it's been on my TBR for years!

message 27: by Bill (new)

Bill Thank you both. I knew I could rely upon you. I hope there is lively discussion

message 28: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 2552 comments as both books deal with Northern Ireland and the protestant/catholic problem, if you're only going to read one:

The Cold Cold Ground is set in 1981 at the height of the most recent "troubles"
The Ghosts of Belfast/The Twelve is set in roughly the current time
