The author also chose not to give Daisy a last name until she married Sloan. Why do you think that was important? What message do you think Ashley was trying to make through a character like Daisy?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments She was more than her family name. That name got her nothing as a child, no love, no protection. Daisy had to make her own life and she did.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments Daisy could be any women who has a tough life. I agree with Anita, she is more than her family name.

Laura Yes, what they said.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1808 comments I agree that she is more than her family name, especially considering that her father abandoned her and her mother was a poor excuse for one. It is Daisy who encompasses her identity and she does not need to give credit to her parents or share it with them.

Ashley had a big identity theme going on in this story! In following the theme, her birth last name tied her to nothing and no one. I’m glad she only used one name. We never got drawn into it and it was meaningless to her.

Lynn (ftbooklover) I didn't like that she didn't have a name because it made it seem as though she didn't have a life until she married Marcus. She did have a life that she worked hard to first escape and then create a new one for herself - building castles. Her lack of a last name made it seem to me as though her life up to that point didn't really matter, and it did.
