The Department of Deductions and Diagnostics

I find it criminal not to have a place for the unofficial consulting detective's skills and notable deductions. However, if you are the Napoléon of crime, it still is criminal to study Mr Holmes' moves...

This place is to discuss the cognitive process, evidence and procedures used in the Canon, and other tools for sleuths. We want to keep this area NSFW free, however if you refer to gruesome forensic cases or crimes, there will be an exception. Note that we do not and will never promote hate crime or any form of violence. If you have any suggestions for this section, send it to our Suggestions and Recommendations. Feel free to post book recommendations here; I'll kick start with The Scientific Sherlock Holmes: Cracking the Case with Science and Forensics. Great read for those interested in how Holmes used science and math.

I'm on page 12 of 129 of The Sign of Four: "...a curious little work upon the influence of a trade upon the form of the hand, with lithotypes of the hands of slaters, sailors, corkcutters, compositors, weavers, and diamond-polishers..."
I am particularly interested in this study.

Also proves useful when deducing the type(s) of instruments one plays.

Possibly! (Dr— not sure MD or PhD) Alfred Gradenwitz was a science writer who focused on the industry, so this part in SIGN probably appealed to him. It's not a very popular study, as I'm having trouble getting a definite name for it.

A Scandal in Bohemia, Holmes to Watson:

"As to your practice, if a gentleman walks into my rooms smelling of iodoform, with a black mark of nitrate of silver upon his right forefinger, and a bulge on the side of his top-hat to show where he has secreted his stethoscope, I must be dull, indeed, if I do not pronounce him to be an active member of the medical profession."

Idoform as antiseptic.
Silver nitrate as antiinfective agent; stops bleeding in minor wounds.

Those chemicals must be strong. Or Holmes probably had a nose for it.

Does anyone know where I can read "The Romance of Medicine" by Dr Doyle? I found the Times article summarizing it, but nothing else, save a small quote. Much thanks. :)

No prob! I think I'll do that. Mom found a quote from it on the ACD estate, but I find it strange that there isn't anything else on it. There is the Times article on it from ACD Encyclopedia, but that's all.
