What would you like to read together in October?
Group bookshelf;
Spreadsheet "Authors vs. Birthdays".

Kimberly | 62 comments I nominate At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'brien, an October birthday author

Carlton | 93 comments I nominate Pigs Have Wings by P.G. Wodehouse, who is also an October birthday author.
I confess, having read about 15 of Wodehouse’s other books, I would agree with Douglas Adams’ assessment of Wodehouse as “the greatest comic writer ever.”

I didn't get that far through the alphabet, but I'd like to read Wodehouse, also.

Wonderful titles, thank you all!
I'd like to read Stravinsky: Chronicle of a Friendship by Robert Craft, also an October-born author, but I like the above-mentioned works, too.
Let's keep going!

Since Pigs Have Wings is part of the Blandings Castle series, do I have to read the books which came before it or is it a standalone?

Carlton | 93 comments Hi Lolita
I have twice tried to reply to your query but lost my text due to the technology.
In short, I am sure that the book can be read as a standalone novel, as Wodehouse always provides sufficient background, and in any case the joy of Wodehouse’s work is his wonderful humour.
However, as with any series, I am sure that your enjoyment would be increased by recognition of characters in earlier books. Hopefully, having enjoyed Pigs Have Wings, you will want to sample more, in which case there are the Psmith, and Jeeves & Wooster series, with some minor characters crossing over between series (and the fourth and final Psmith novel being the second Blandings Castle!). The works just inhabit a wonderfully imagined England of 1910-1939 that never existed, but really should have.

Thank you all for your nominations.
This thread is now being closed. I've just created a poll to decide which of the above books we're going to read in October; please, check it out and cast your vote.
