Glad you're with us again! Can you believe I still haven't read that one? Enjoy!

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments I just jumped in. Was thinking I might skip this one, as I have a huge "to read" backlog, and there isn't much horror in it. But I've been meaning to read some Laird Barron, and I might read a zombie book or two... So, maybe something like this:

Feed (Newsflesh Trilogy, #1) by Mira Grant Married with Zombies (Living with the Dead, #1) by Jesse Petersen The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All by Laird Barron

Glad you decided to join us! I still have not got around to reading Feed, and I have never heard of Laird Barron. Adding to my list of interest.
So far, you're the only one who has entered the charity giveaway. Not sure why people aren't interested in winning a donation to charity. Mind boggling!

He's on my list now too. I just picked up one of Tremblay's books at a library sale the other day. I loved Disappearance at Devil's Rock. Still need to get around to his others.

Tawallah I didn't sign up but here are some horror titles I am planning on reading :
Currently reading: The Queen of Bedlam
Planned reads: Different Seasons: Four Novellas The Waste Lands and Doctor SleepThe Chestnut Man and The Turn of The Screw by Henry James

Yes, I know it is King heavy. I have a few others like The Passage (The Passage #1) by Justin Cronin Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler Dracula by Bram Stoker , Catherine House. This isn't my favourite genre to be honest.

If any time of year is good for King, it's now! I always read a lot of King in October.

Intriguing titles!
I'm working on Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Icy-Cobwebs-In-Space (readingreindeerproximacentauri) | 159 comments Friday and Saturday I reread (after decades) The Haunting of Hill House. My 8th Spooky read of 10 titles so far in October. I'm sure I picked up nuances I'd missed. Very impressed, and I am determined to find an in-depth biography of Shirley Jackson, and also to make its reread an annual October tradition. About to read HEX, The Once and Future Witches, and The Last House on Needless Street over these next few days.

I'm hoping to get to The Once and Future Witches and hoping my hold comes in for The Last House on Needless Street!

I started reading Mexican Gothic over the weekend too.

I'm also reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #1) by Ransom Riggs
(which is a reread I have the following two books but don't remember a thing.)

Finished: Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin , Yours Cruelly, Elvira Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark by Cassandra Peterson , I Love Lucy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Sitcom by Gregg Oppenheimer

message 18: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 565 comments I'm still reading Murder on Cold Street (Lady Sherlock, #5) by Sherry Thomas , stuck in a bit of a reading slump and this book is seeming to last forever. :(
I finished listening to See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt . It was okay. A bit blah. I've read more exciting and interesting Lizzie Borden accounts.
I started listening to The Manningtree Witches by A.K. Blakemore today.

Maybe I need to reread The Haunting of Hill House myself, as I wasn't very impressed the first time. I think Hell House by Richard Matheson is better, but that's my personal opinion. I LOVED Hex. Hoping to do a reread of it at some point. Have Once and Future Witches on my wishlist. Happy reading!

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments Miss Peregrine's Home is fantastic. I can't think of another fantasy that includes such a compelling romance... and the rest of the book is great too! Alas, each of the sequels is a bit weaker than the book that came before.

I was very lukewarm on Gods of Jade and Shadow, which I found to be plot-fluffy and rather forgettable. I have heard that Mexican Gothic is better. Thoughts?

For my own part, I just finished,
Rosemary's Baby (Rosemary's Baby, #1) by Ira Levin
which was okay, but definitely weaker than The Stepford Wives, which it felt like a bit of a dress rehearsal to. Ira Levin is a delightful writer though.

I'm not sure I was aware that Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby were from the same author. I read Stepford wives years ago and wasn't all that crazy about it; and Rosemary's Baby has been on my list for awhile now.

I'm still just starting Mexican Gothic, I feel like it's a slow build up but something about the style has caught my attention enough. As for Miss Peregrine, I only have the first three and will probably see how I feel about continuing afterward, I hadn't realized the series had gotten so long.

message 26: by Joshua (last edited Oct 13, 2021 07:56PM) (new)

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments I'd be curious to hear more of what you thought about The Stepford Wives. Levin's other famous book, A Kiss Before Dying is terribly dated (1950s patriarchal crap) but it's very suspenseful and tightly paced. I didn't much like the ending...

Gods of Jade and Shadow had a nice tone. It just felt underdeveloped and random.

I just finished
Crota by Owl Goingback
Which I quite liked. A monster from Native American legend emerges to terrorize a rural Missouri town. It's a lovely twist on a classic creature story, and quite well put together.

Honestly if you just read the first 3, you're good. The second 3 were a money grab and not as good as the first 3.

I managed to read a little bit of The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward before succumbing to the migraine and I finished it yesterday. WHOA. A WILD RIDE.
I started reading The Meddlesome Ghost (The Lovers of Stanford Abbey, #2) by Sheila Rosalynd Allen yesterday (hey it's got a ghost so it fits! lol) and I'm still reading The Year of the Witching (Bethel, #1) by Alexis Henderson which is, so far, not as interesting as I thought it would be.

The first one was a re-read for me and I enjoyed it again but the second one, though we got a lot more story which was nice, it was kind of pointless? There is going to be a third book though due out in early 2022 [bookcover:Gwendy's Final Task|59433723].

I don't think I'll be getting to Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia this month! I still want to read The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling and listen to The Return by Rachel Harrison . Iffff I read those and finish The Year of the Witching (Bethel, #1) by Alexis Henderson , then I will pick it up!

message 44: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments I've had a decent month of reading and managed to squeeze in a few horror themed books. So far, I have finished:
Rosemary's Baby (Rosemary's Baby, #1) by Ira Levin Crota by Owl Goingback Come Closer by Sara Gran Married with Zombies (Living with the Dead, #1) by Jesse Petersen Flip This Zombie (Living with the Dead, #2) by Jesse Petersen The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All by Laird Barron When We Were Animals by Joshua Gaylord
I was a bit underwhelmed by Rosemary's Baby. Crota was a lot better than I expected it to be, and was really a lot of fun. Come Closer was a rubbish demon possession book with no wrinkles and some rank homophobia. The two zombie books are a trip and a half. Laird Barron's story collection was fantastic. And When We Were Animals was an extremely raw and evocative coming-of-age story masquerading as a werewolf tale. The last two titles, I strongly recommend!
