I read this book in middle or early high school, so circa 2006. I only remember vague details. I believe the narrator was a brunette and her twin sister was blonde. The narrator always thought of herself as ugly compared to her sister. They grew up at the beach. The only other part I actually remember was that it ends with the narrator living in a small town in the mountains, with a successful career (veterinarian, if I’m not mistaken?), married, with a baby at home. I remember in the last chapter, she talks about how her boobs hurt because she needed to nurse her baby. At one point in the book, she also references the famous “am I my brother’s keeper” quote from the story of Cain and Abel. I’m sorry if this isn’t enough detail. I’ve got ADHD; the fact that I remember this much after 15 years is a miracle.

Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson.

The quote is: "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated . . ." With her grandmother's taunt, Louise knew that she, like the biblical Esau, was the despised elder twin. Caroline, her selfish younger sister, was the one everyone loved."

Mai | 1280 comments You remembered plenty! I searched: novel "coming of age" "fraternal twins" "brunette" "blonde" and the first result was the Amazon page for this novel!
You know, this is weird but something was nagging at me about this book's description! I did a bit more research and the cover in this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_H... (contains MANY spoilers) looks extremely familiar!! I'm wondering if I read this book at some point...
