Read mid-late 2000s. A boy (I think randomly off the street one day maybe) ends up in an exam. While sitting the exam he notices the people around him are disappearing until he is the last one left. He ends up at some sort of magic academy (quite a serious place) with other students. I think he struggles at first (or a friend does) but he eventually succeeds.

How old is the boy? Could it be The Magicians by Lev Grossman? The first book came out 2009.Highschooler Quentin Coldwater from Brooklyn ends up at Breakbills College for Magical Pedagogy and there's a lot of dark things happening related to a Narnia-like book series called Fillory.

This book has also been made into a television series, that is where I first found it. It's actually pretty good, waiting for another season now.

I loved it, too. If you haven't watched all of it yet, ooooo! there are some doozies in the later seasons! My husband has read the books and says there are some serious changes, but he loved the show because of the changes.
