5 stars. A little gem hiding in Elizabeth Chadwick's back catalogue. Highly recommended for any fan of medieval-set historical fiction as she brings the past to life like few other authors can.
On TBR since somewhere between 2007 and 2010 as I have read the book before but not since joining GR.

4 stars. I really enjoyed this but preferred Circe, her second novel. Also, I probably should have read this before Pat Barker's Silence of the Girls because that was so brilliant it casts every other retelling of the Iliad in the shade. I liked the fact Madeline Miller did not dodge the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles and the last few chapters were fantastic.
On Kindle TBR since 02/06/2015.
Thanks for your encouragement Pamela and good luck with your own climb.

3 stars. Often reads more like a commentary of her films/plays more than information about Hepburn but it was interesting.
On TBR since... guess who forgot to add it. I think I acquired it last year.

4 stars. A novel about life in a fourteenth century Norfolk convent; characters live and die, plague and rebels and thieves strike; time passes but the convent still survives.
On TBR since June or July 2015.

Total books read in August: 24 (although I read 1 book with 2 books in it so actually 25).
Total qualifying for this challenge: 12.
SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE
I read all five books I spun for this challenge but I am still making my way through Tipping the Velvet which I added for my Virtual TBR challenge.
SEPTEMBER SPINS
I am back to spinning my own wheel and spun:
1. Religion - The Cloister Walk by Kathleen Norris
2. Romance - One Summer in Tuscany by Domenica de Rosa
3. Adult - The Evil Seed by Joanne Harris
4. Highest Rated Kindle - I had a lot of new books at the top of this list. The first one was Savior of Regrets which is book 4 in a series and I have not yet read book 3 but both were published in 2021 so could not be used for this challenge.
The next series was Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti's Harlequin Crew series, books 3 and 2 and I had the same problems except that the first in the series Devil's Pass is from 2020 and unread plus was 9th on the Kindle highest rated list in its own right.
So I will read Devil's Pass by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti.
From previous challenges:
Victor Hugo - Les Misérables from March 2020.
James M. Powell (ed.) - The Deeds of Innocent III from October 2020.
Alan Savage - Ottoman from December 2020.
Michael Hicks - Warwick the Kingmaker from March 2021.
Charles Freeman - A New History of Early Christianity from March 2021.
The Crusade of Frederick Barbarossa: The History of the Expedition of the Emperor Frederick and Related Texts from April 2021.
Kathleen Winsor - Forever Amber from July 2021.
Alexandre Dumas - The Borgias from July 2021.
Sarah Waters - Tipping the Velvet (Virtual TBR) from August 2021.

(I will cross them out if I read them). Hoping if I have to keep updating this it might put me off buying books...Although they will all count for this challenge...in 2022.

9.

10. The Switching Hour: A Halloween Reverse Harem Romance by Krista Wolf.

5 stars. Another of my favourite books by her this has some of the wittiest dialogues between hero and heroine in her books.
On TBR since ? Read before but not since 2010.
106. Devil's Pass by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti.

4 stars. A nice little novella setting up the main story. I hope to start the series proper soon. I was saving it for next year when the final novels are published... but my wheel picked it for me.
On Kindle TBR since 06/11/2020.
107. The Divine Comedy, Vol. 3: Paradise by by Dante Alighieri.

5 stars. I have finally read The Divine Comedy all the way through. The Inferno is my favourite part but Beatrice was less annoying in Paradise than she was in Purgatory. Although she is guilty of victim blaming, but I am putting my "It was written 700 years ago" hat on.
On TBR since 27/10/2012.

5 stars. The first book in the series lived up to the prequel. #Team Maverick. I just remembered I bought books 2 and 3 this year so... they don't count for this challenge :(
On TBR since 06/11/2020.

3 stars. Enjoyable fun but perhaps the worst Domenica de Rosa/Elly Griffiths I have read. I was not enthusiastic about the plot and the large cast of characters were not used properly.
On TBR since 05/12/2020.
110. The Borgias by Alexandre Dumas.

2 stars. A recounting of the black legend of the Borgias. Dumas threw out the real Juan Borgia and gave Cesare a good brother instead. Ha ha. My translation was stilted and the edition annoying with Os and As interchanged.
On TBR since 30/10/2017.

3 stars. Not bad, not good. I have kind of forgotten his main points and I only read it 2 days ago.
On TBR since 24/08/2019.

4 stars. I loved this book. It was on my list of books that I might get rid of but it is perhaps the biggest surprise of the year for me so far. It is hard to say what it is about; part memoir, comment on the liturgy, about religious experience.
On TBR since somewhere between July 2015 and May 2016.

4 stars. Joanne Harris does vampires. This is a re-read for me and I liked it much better the second time round. The writing style is descriptive and there is a great sense of atmosphere. But there is also something lacking too...the ending is a little confused and there are parts from the first storyline, narrated by Daniel, that I can't remember an explanation for. Why was he in the hospital? I did like the fact the ending does not go for an easy option.
Also, this is one of my favourite book covers of all time.
On TBR since...I bought it after it was reprinted in 2008 and read it then or in 2009 and unhauled my copy. I re-acquired it on 05/01/2020.

5 stars. The layered story of a pair of two-egg twins whose lives are ruined by the "Love Laws" that lay down "who should be loved, and how. And how much." Some of the most luscious prose I have ever read. Looking at reviews on GR this seems to be a book that polarises people. Put me in the "I love it" camp!
On TBR since... I used to own the paperback but unhauled it when I moved. I bought the Kindle edition I just read on 01/10/2020.

Total books read in August: 22
Total qualifying for this challenge: 10
OCTOBER CHALLENGE
I read all 4 books. Devil's Pass was a novella starting a new series and I also read book 1 (which qualified for this challenge and books 2-4 which I bought this year and didn't). Eagerly awaiting the fifth and final part. I also finished The Borgias by Alexandre Dumas from my August challenge.

5. The Red Prince: The Life of John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster by Helen Carr.

3 stars. A joke birthday present from a friend who knows I am a cat person! The illustrations were cute but the writers committed the faux pas of missing out the gorgeous clumber spaniel. A nice present for children.
On TBR since 04/05/2019.
116. Medieval Political Thought by Walter Ullmann.

3 stars. Intriguing but because it is the first book of its type I have read, I don't have much to compare it to.
On TBR since 15/12/2020.

3 stars. An interesting look at the question of whether Christians and Muslims worship the same God. Honestly, I have always assumed the answer was yes, just in different ways (taking my cue from Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well).
On Kindle TBR since 06/07/2015.

3 stars. A world where women are almost extinct and those not formally owned by the government or by private clubs are subject to being sold as slaves by traders. This sounded great but the pace was too quick and the characters were not well developed.
On Kindle TBR since 22/09/2019.

4 stars. I really enjoyed this. Gaskell shines a light on nineteenth century industrial disputes in Manchester while also crafting a love story between Mary Barton and her childhood friend Jem Wilson. The portrayal of the character of Esther cast a shadow on my enjoyment; yes, this book is Victorian but if you are going to include a "fallen woman" character remember that "God is love". The concept of redemption is a key part of the faith...
On TBR since (I think) 04/05/2012.
120. Lady of Quality by Georgette Heyer.

5 stars. Continuing my GH re-read. Recommended if you liked Venetia and Black Sheep. With her unusual residential circumstances (living independently of her brother) and her strong independent streak Annis is perhaps easier to identify with than other Heyer characters for many modern readers.
The sparks really fly between the leading couple. Oliver Carleton is delightfully rude.
On TBR since ? Last read 2010.

5 stars. I haven't read this since I was at university. I loved these letters particularly Heloise's dismantling of the Benedictine rule as applied to women.
On TBR since 2001/2002. Read before for university.

6. Wicked Charming Cruel by Emmy Chandler.

3 stars. A good writer does what she can with a novelisation of a mediocre movie.
On TBR since 08/01/2012.

5 stars. One of my favourite Heyer novels. Two people get married for the wrong reasons and gradually learn how to grow and relate to each other... and fall in love. I love "nemesis" and the sidekicks.
On TBR since ? Re-read multiple times and owned for at least 15 years. Apparently I have not re-read it since 2011 which is a crime.
I have also finished Tipping the Velvet which is from my Bookopoly rolls in August and counts for my Virtual TBR instead.

4 stars. An interesting look at an interesting man. Michael Hicks does what he can with the available evidence.
On TBR since 1998/9. I believe this is the oldest unread book on my shelves (other than anthologies like the Complete Works of Shakespeare/ the Riverside Chaucer which technically I have not read everything in).
125. High Risk by Emma Darcy.

3 stars. I believe this is the third copy of this book I have owned and it was a favourite of mine when I was a teenager. I bought it to read in honour of Emma Darcy (Wendy Brennan) as she died in December 2020. It is very sweet.
On TBR since 25/12/2020.

4 stars. A re-read for me and one I really enjoyed. Intriguing epistolary novel from the eighteenth century which is clearly half-way between Austen and Victorian politeness and the frolics and bawdiness of earlier eighteenth century novels. Some very cruel behaviour to some of the older female characters exemplify this particularly well (throwing women in ditches and racing Octogenarians even when they hurt themselves).
On TBR since ? I read this years ago. I ordered Cecilia in 2007 so I have perhaps owned it since about the same time.

4 stars. Good story overall although it dragged a little in the middle. Looking forward to book 2 in the series.
On Kindle TBR since 03/05/2020.

3 stars. I wanted to like this more than I did. It dragged a little but became more interesting towards the end.
On TBR since 11/11/2009.
129. And the final book was my year long reading challenge: Holy Bible: King James Version

5 stars. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
On TBR since 19/12/2013. Although I have obviously read most of it before. I usually use the NRSV but wanted to know that I had read this iconic version.

Total books read in December: 17
