Aggie spoke four languages. Aggie and Inti had created a sign language that both could share privately. While Inti watched out for Aggie, Aggie also was a protector of Inti and didn't hesitate to fight for her. Inti's mom sent both girls to live with the father when she couldn't manage raising them both. Aggie and Inti helped their father with house chores.
Aggie and Inti had to adjust to their father's way of living and food consumption. He was determined to teach them how to be a better custodian of the Earth and not waste food or resources. He rejected the idea of going to the store and purchasing items and supporting the food industry. He felt "this is how the world dies."
He taught the girls how to hunt and track animals. Inti learned how to distinguish different animals, including wolves.
Present day, winter is ending and the wolf project team is having difficulty getting the wolves to leave their cages and attempt their new lives. Slowly they start to leave. The team is concerned for their well-being. Many wolves die from illness, starvation, fight or humans.
Aggie is sad that the wolves are leaving and afraid for their survival. Inti speaks to her mother who gets a brief update from Inti. The wolf team runs into townspeople having a drink. The wolf team feel threatened by their unfriendly gestures of attempted concern over the wolves. Inti antagonizes the group and mentions about Stuart beating his wife. Duncan converses with Inti about the wolves and eventually Inti finds herself spending the night with him.
Aggie reflects on her time with her father and how much that experience has shaped her future. Can Inti overcome past memories in order to move forward in life? Will these memories affect her job with the wolves? The wolves are having difficulty leaving their cages, but slowly do. Can they survive out there? Can they survive against a town of people determined to get them? Can Inti trust Duncan?
