Do you Google anything about a book before you read it or while you're reading it?

Barbara K Typically before I read a book I try to learn only enough about it to make a determination about whether I will want to read it.

While I am reading I might Google topics covered by the book. Say, my inner nerd wants to know more about the geography of the area where a book takes place.

But I generally hold off on learning more about what other people thought of a book until I'm done. I like my reviews to reflect my own impressions of a book without the filter of other opinions.

David Freas (quillracer) | 2376 comments I check the synopsis on Amazon or Goodreads. With an author I like, it's just to see what the story is about. With a new author, the synopsis can make or break whether I read it or not.

Pamela Mclaren | 193 comments I agree. I always read the synopsis for a book. Sometimes I'll download the first chapter to see if I like the writing and even read a bio for the author. Then while I'm reading, I often look up the topics discussed in the book, especially if it's a book covering a certain historic period or a real person is one of the characters.

Julesy I do if it's an author I've never read before or an author I've read before but have on/off feelings of their previous works. If it's one of my favorite authors, I don't bother to google - I just get their book.

I usually try to find out a little bit about a book before reading it, even if it's for my in person book club. I just like to know.

I do this too. Even with popular or classic novels I try to not know much going into it. I do google books while reading them, and if they are super-slow or confusing I might even read the wikipedia page on the author and the book, but only after at least 50pgs of reading.
