Hi Lynette :)
Great idea starting a thread on our group for doing readathon stuff, but we already have a whole folder for these kinds of threads, For the Blogless. You are welcome to start a thread in that folder instead or I can move this one to the correct folder. Typically all these other folders that are just for a specific event are removed and their contents are archived not too long after the event, while the For the Blogless folder is kept up and you can use your thread as long as you want to, during and between readathons.

We have had the For the Blogless folder for quite a few years, actually, and new members add their own topic in that folder, to which they post their readathon updates, TBRs, track progress on readathon goals, etc. That is one tradition that hopefully will remain in place long after my time.

No worries. Your thread is in the right place now. Have fun with the rest of your fall pre-readathon reading/planning time :)

Um terrible. It's the 11th hour and I'm trying to set up my journal and plan my day. I have my list of books put together and now I'm going to make a tentative hour by hour plan. I may need to make the journal happen on the fly. Time got away from me. There's another readathon in November (from another group) that I may be able to pull it all together for. Thank you for asking Elsi. How's it going with you?

message 11: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 324 comments Here is my list of books that I would like to read tomorrow. I haven't started any of them so I'm hoping that I am able to complete at least two.
The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki
Fuzz When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach
How the Word Is Passed A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith
Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr
Please Don't Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes Essays by Phoebe Robinson

What is this other readathon in November? (I'm a readathon addict…)

It’s on Black Friday. I can get you details later Susy.

Lynnette | 324 comments In the first sprint I read 37 pages of The Book of Form and Emptiness
Off to sort my laundry, make a big cup of tea and then my intent is to stick with this book until the next sprint. I think that’s how I’ve decided to work my day. We’ll see.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I want to get stuff done today around house and yard with audio in between reading also.

message 19: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 324 comments I continued reading Form and Emptiness until the second sprint and then I changed books and started reading Fuzz. I got 34 pages (I’m starting to wonder if I’m a slow reader, when I look at others’ posts. Anyway now I’m hungry and I need to change over my laundry. Not doing a great job with my journal so far, but taking sketchy notes on paper.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 1435 comments Sounds good, Lynette, sometimes I am amazed how many books some get finished on these thons. I don't have a set number, just read, sometimes smaller and sometimes books half done, just depend on my current plans and mood.

I’m pretty sure I’ll have a lot of half finished stuff today. Just excited to have the time set aside just for this. We’ll mostly for this

I'm definitely a slow reader and on top of that I'm now reading a book with tiny lettering (and not too engaging short stories) so I'm reading about 20 pages an hour...

message 25: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 324 comments New book for third sprint: How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America. Thirty pages during the sprint. This will DEFINITELY be a slow read, but it deserves attention. I'm hungry again, still working on my laundry and now I'm thinking that I should shower and change locations. Not sure reading a new book every sprint was the best idea in retrospect because my goal was also to finish two books (from the beginning). It's beginning to feel too ambitious. We'll see how it all goes. For now it's break time.

message 28: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 324 comments Started another book Seven Days in June for the Hour 12 sprint with 38 pages in. I'm determined to stick to my plan and then reflect on lessons learned so that I can be more (equally?) successful for my next readathon. I have however introduced wine to the equation so I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be able to sustain.

message 29: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 324 comments Readathon Summary:

Started 4 Books:
Seven Days in June 159 pages
How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America 68 pages
Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law115 pages
The Book of Form and Emptiness 80 pages

Total of 422 pages-Hmm, I really could have completed just one book.

Lessons learned for next time:
1)--Set ambitious but realistic goals-all of my books were both long and I was starting from the beginning. Originally, I was going to begin to read 6 books with the hopes of completing 2. I changed that goal by hour 16 with the hope that I could at least finish one of the 4 I'd already started
2)--I'm a slower reader than I thought. Next time if I don't have one half finished book to complete I need to think about how fast I can realistically read a whole book and manage expectations accordingly
3)--I did laundry all day. While it gave me the opportunity to get up and move around, it's more time consuming than I'd initially anticipated especially since I had two week's worth to do. Next time I will not have any chores planned.
4)--On the other hand it would have been good for me to have gone for a walk or do some other physical thing.
5)--Once I got out of bed I stayed on the couch for the rest of the time. I will move to the other locations in my house where I'd planned to read
6)--I will prep my food, journal and posts in advance. I think I did a good job of not going down a rabbit hole when I got on the internet, preparing food and trying to set up my journal while tracking it took up too much time. I will be borrowing heavily from @Lena the Reader for organizational tips
7)--Sleep. I should have set up two hour naps throughout the day so that my Readathon didn't end effectively at hour 19
8) Bingo-hmm didn't really happen

The good news is that I participated and survived my second Dewey's and that this time was better than the last and I'm looking forward to the next and I hope that all had a good 24 hours of reading! Thank you to all of the moderators for taking this on.

Lynette, you did a great job! I'm so touched to be an inspiration. It also adds a bit of pressure too! :-)

message 31: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments I agree, think you did an awesome job, Lynnette!
Loved to read your lessons learned; I have them each and every time. I somehow always think 24 hours last longer than they actually do lol. I do have a "normal" nights sleep, for me short naps don't work because in no time I'm tired again and in need of sleep hahaha.
I always plan to take a walk, which I do in April when my friends joins me for the readathon, but somehow October is more of a "couch-month" lol

Hope to see you in April!

- Get book recommendations from someone on social media. Pick 3 of those recommended books, get them, and read them.
- Choose a book with at least 300 pages, and a notebook/reading journal. Read the book, stopping every 20-30pgs to journal about your reading(pictures, quotes, reactions, etc.).
- Read a book published between 2020 and 2022.
- Read a book originally published before 1950.
- Browse the current world news. Choose a country/region/issue from the news that interests you. Find a book related to your chosen topic/location, and read it.
- Read a book set during a world war.
- Write and post a review for a book you enjoyed this year. (This can be on Goodreads, Amazon, your blog, etc. We have a folder in our Goodreads group where you can post these, too.)
