Gideon Lindsey Off to Be the Wizard is a novel written by Scott Meyer and is the first book in the Magic 2.0 series. It’s a story about local computer nerd, Martin Banks. This guy’s so good at being a computer nerd that he hacks reality itself. The universe this book takes place in is a computer simulation and for reasons that I’d hope are explained in later books, the servers for that simulation can be accessed within itself.
It’s a really well-crafted and fun story. It plays into what people would rationally do if they gained the ability to alter reality. Of course, Martin gets caught for bank fraud but because he’s able to alter when in time he is, he travels back to the Middle Ages and becomes a wizard. Upon arrival, he learns that there’s actually a whole society of wizards there already who are all in similar situations to him. So he spends most of the book training to become a wizard and its a really interesting journey.
Not only does Martin grow as a person and mature as he learns, but it also introduces plenty of new mechanics and interesting concepts. Basically, it’s just fun to read about all these fun superpowers. I won’t spoil the ending, but the villain is a pretty good parallel to Martin and who he was at the start of the story. So overall, I’d give the book four stars out of five.
