Series Read-Along, Tug-of-War!

This will be a two-month team reading challenge which will run from November 1st 2021, to December 31st 2021 inclusively. Results will be announced on January 1st 2022.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into two teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy read your book. You will also earn bonus points if your book is part of a series ☺

You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant if you would prefer not to be in a team for any reason ☺

The aim of this challenge is to read as many series/sequels as you can before the new year. However, there will also be an added element - A Tug of War!

Participants will be split into two teams - Team Naughty and Team Nice, and the two teams will compete against each other to see which team can earn the most points!

(You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant if you would prefer not to be in a team for any reason ☺)

★ ★ ★ Important. Please read:★ ★ ★

* The minimum page counts needed to earn bonus points are the same as the minimum page count for page points -
~ Adult/Ya without illustrations = 50 pages
~ Middle-grade/children's books without illustrations = 75 pages
~ Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse = 150 pages

* You may add together page counts to reach these minimums, but you can only add together page counts of books which do not count on their own. (So less than 50 / 75 / 150 pages respectively.)

* Books started before November can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, and bonus points. Please let us know how many pages you have read in November/December when you post on your team review thread.

* You may choose to read books which are not part of a series, you just won't receive any bonus points for these books. You will still be able to earn page points and buddy read points.

* Books which are part of a series may be used to earn bonus points, irrespective of how many books there are in the series, and how many of those books have been published.

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod

* Books must be read between the 1st of November and the 31st of December 2021 inclusive. Books started before November may be used, and unfinished books may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in November/December. Please let us know how many pages you have read in November/December when posting your review.

* The minimum page counts needed for both page points and completing blocks are:
~ Adult/Ya without illustrations = 50 pages
~ Middle-grade/children's books without illustrations = 75 pages
~ Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse = 150 pages
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.

* Books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA, will be scored at children's rates.

* Books which are illustrated, have an illustrator listed, or are tagged 'illustrated', 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, will be scored at illustrated rates.

* Books may be added together to reach these minimums, as long as all books are under the minimum. You can't add a book to another book which is long enough to count on its own.

* Book samples may be used to earn page points, but must have a page count published on either Goodreads or Amazon to count.

* If you have short books which you have read and reviewed but which are not long enough to qualify for points, please post it on your team review thread, and we will make a list, and then add them together at the end (where possible).

* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language.

* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by PM' after 'Review:'.

* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge as long as it has been at least 8 months since you last read the book (which would be before March 2021 this month). We recommend that you post on your review '2021 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.

* If you have started reading a book previously but not finished it, and want to start again from the beginning in November/December please let us know you have started from the beginning again when posting, to speed up the scoring process.

*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.

*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave. Comments must also be different from your review or status updates. If your buddy read comments, and your review or status updates are identical, then you will not receive points for both until they contain different details.

* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.

* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... (view spoiler)

* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for November/December 2021 will count. You can find the list of these here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.

* Please only post one review per comment on your team's review thread, unless you are adding the books together to reach a minimum page count.

* Please do not wait until the end of the challenge to post masses of reviews. This is not fair on your team or the mods who have to count the reviews. We will limit you to no more than 10 reviews in any one 24 hour period. If you post more than 10, they will not be counted.

* Reviews posted after the end of the challenge will also not be counted.

* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time, which is Pacific Standard Time - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo... The challenge will start at 00:01 on November 1st 2021 PST, and end at 00:01 on January 1st 2022 PST.

* You are welcome to start the challenge on the 1st of the month in your own time zone, but you must also finish the challenge on your own time zone. Please let us know if you are doing this, as Goodreads may time stamp your books as being started on the last day of the previous month.

* Whilst you may start on your own timezone, the challenge will still end on Goodreads time, so even if you start late, you cannot end late.

* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (view spoiler)

* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links. We do reserve the right to not add additional points on when posts have been amended, as it may be unclear how many points were awarded the first time.

* If you sign up after teams are posted, we will try to place you on a team, but if teams are balanced that may not always be possible. You can always join a waiting list for a team, or go solo ☺

* The position you are in on the waiting list will not guarantee that you will be offered a place if one becomes available. This will be based on how strong of a reader you are seen to be. If you have read 50 books within the first 2 weeks, and the person who has dropped out would not be expected to read more than 12, then we will not offer you the place to be fair to the other teams.

* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to myself.***

YA/Adult Books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 50 pages*
(view spoiler)
(Maximum of 12 points per book)

Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*
(view spoiler)
(maximum of 8 points per book)

Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*
(view spoiler)
(maximum of 4 points per book)

Buddy reads MATCH your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points.
(view spoiler)
(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in this group.)

If books are long enough to count on their own (50/75/150 pages) they will be scored on their own.
If you read two novellas of 80 pages each, you will receive a 1 in the books read column as together they are over 100 pages, and 1 page point for each (2 points total), as each book is individually long enough to earn points. This applies to all types of points.

* Bonus points will be awarded based on page count, the same as page points and buddy read points. So if you read a 300 page book which is part of a series, you will receive 6 page points + 6 bonus points ☺

★ Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -

Team Name:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|_Points|

Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Team______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

★ We will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column.
The minimums to earn a 1 in the books read column are -
Edit:
* 100 pages - YA/NA/Adult/non-fiction book (without illustrations)
* 150 pages - Middle-grade or children's book (without illustrations)
* 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry, plays, novels written in verse, and books with some illustrations etc.
(You may add books together to reach these numbers if you would like)

* 50 pages - YA/NA/Adult/non-fiction book (without illustrations)
* 75 pages - Middle-grade or children's book (without illustrations)
* 150 pages of graphic novels, poetry, plays, novels written in verse, and books with some illustrations etc.
(You may add books together to reach these numbers if you would like)
- Changed to match minimum page counts for points.

This challenge will be a team challenge. We will have a small number of teams, with a mixture of readers in each. When signing up please let us know whether you would like to be on a team, or whether you would like to go solo ☺

Teams should be posted by late October. If you sign-up after teams are posted, we will try to add you to a team, but we may not always be able to. Please sign-up as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Thank you! ☺

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Q = does it count if a book was just published, but will be part of a series in the future?

A = Yes, as long as they are clearly part of a series they will count ☺
* Books which are part of a series may be used to earn bonus points, irrespective of how many books there are in the series, and how many of those books have been published.

Q = quick clarification: so for books in verse, you get a point for every 150 pages but you don't get a 1 under books read unless it is at least 300 pages?

A = Yes, the same as normal ☺
Edit: This has now been changed to match minimum page counts for points.

Q = ᑕᗩᑎ I ᑭᒪEᗩᔕE ᖇEᗩᗪ ᗰY Oᗯᑎ ᗷOOKᔕ ᖴOᖇ TᕼIᔕ ?

A = Yes, the same as normal ☺

Q = ᗯIᒪᒪ ᗰY TEᗩᗰ ᕼᗩᐯE ᗩ TEᗩᗰ ᑕᕼᗩT ᒪIKE ᗰY OTᕼEᖇ GᖇOᑌᑭᔕ Oᑎ ᕼEᖇE ᗪO?"

A = Yes, teams always have chat threads ☺

Q = When do we get started with this?

A = November 1st ☺

Q = In the past bonus points have been based on where the book is in the series (i.e. 1st book gets 1 bonus point, 2nd book gets 2 bonus points). Is that happening this year?

A = I've actually taken that out this year so that we can use the lower minimum page counts ☺ It makes things easier if people don't need a minimum of 200 pages to earn bonus points x

Q = Because this is a two month challenge, if we start something in November and finish in December, does the whole book count?

A = Yes ☺
