Hey everyone!
I'm gonna go ahead and start a collaborative story. Please join if you're interested!
Here's how this is going to work. I'm gonna post a topic. Some kind of basic idea for a fantasy world. Following this, everyone who wants to participate gets to create one or two characters. Then you post about your character following the template that I'm going to post once I create my character. After this, we can kind of discuss the general direction we want the story to go, and then we take turns posting paragraphs from our characters' pov. The characters will interact, and eventually, we will have a really long story patchworked together from a bunch of different characters' povs! (hint: think rp for cool people!) :)

Cool! If you think of it like writing chapters in a book rather than rp, it's easier. (I think anyway) :)

Fëalórin (jsclingman) Cool. Let's do this!

YEAH I LOVE THE SPIRIT!!!! :D
Let's take a bit of time to build the world. I'm thinking we could maybe do some kind of desert-type world with oases interspersed (I think I already said that lol).
We could have multiple people groups, like maybe some Elves with powers and dark secrets, some kind of human-equivalents, and some kind of other people group that no one likes but also happen to be like the most powerful and pure of all the peoples.
Maybe we could have some portals to different places, and maybe the oases harbor some kind of subterfuge. Maybe the world was different years ago, and something someone did turned it into a desert.
Idk I'm just brainstorming over here!

Lol thanks! Do you have any ideas we could add? If not we could just build some characters and jump right in!

DESERT FANTASY. Deserts are so much fun to write.

How big are the oases? How many towns can each support? Civilizations would naturally spring up around water sources, so they'd probably have the densest populations, but it could also be fun to have a race or two that don't need as much water and can dwell farther from the oases, which would create some interesting questions about how their construction works... or maybe they're nomads, so they're able to move more-or-less with the sand and they don't have to worry so much about towns falling apart or being buried?

It could also be fun to have some hidden or undiscovered oases, maybe in rocky areas? I'm picturing something like Petra, with maybe a natural spring or infrastructure for retaining and filtering rainwater. (If I recall correctly, Petra had/has the latter.)

There's so much we could do with this!

BROOOO YOU BE GENIUS!!! I LOVE THE IDEAS!!!!!!
We should totally have some hidden oases! Maybe the outcast people group I mentioned could be the nomads who move with the sand. The oases I was imagining vary in size from large enough to support a major city to small enough for just a couple of families.
Keep brainstorming! Let's get maybe three or four more ideas on the table so we can start character creation!

Ooh, that would be cool!

How do the nomads travel? Do they use tents like the Bedouin, or OOOH it could be interesting for them to have structures built on the backs of some sort of animal that they also use as transportation? Like when you see mini tents on the backs of elephants or camels? Or they could maybe have some sort of wagon things, sort of like gypsies, but then they'd have wheels to worry about with the sand. Unless they had wagons on, say, something like tank treads that could just slide over the sand.

I like the idea of differing oasis sizes! Those would likely produce really different cultures, too, with different values. The bigger cities might have a bigger focus on manufacturing, while the smaller ones might focus on getting what they can to trade? They might end up hunter-gatherer types as they try to accumulate enough goods to trade with the bigger oases?

DUDE I FLIPPING LOVE YOUR IDEAS!!!!!!!
Yes! We should totally have some kind of tent thing on the backs of desert animals! Although I also like the sand-track idea. Should we make profuse use of sink holes? I like sink holes. Maybe they have some kind of emergency thingy they use to protect themselves against falling beneath the sand. Maybe they put their stuff on the backs of animals which pull shelters on carts with tracks?
Yes! Maybe the smaller oases run a secret "black market" type thing with the hated nomads, who they fear, but are willing to trade with because the nomads are so good at hunting animals and edible plants. The bigger cities execute nomads maybe? The smaller oases pretend like they're the ones finding all these things themselves to protect the nomads?

Sink-holes would be so fun! Yessss! That would be so cool!

*gasp* I love it! I imagine that could lead to some interesting inter-cultural dynamics, too, with relationships shifting from an initial distrust between the families and the nomads to a better understanding of each other's cultures and an appreciation for each other; and possibly a shift between the families and the cities, too, with an initial friendship devolving into distrust as the cities maybe take advantage of the smaller communities and the smaller communities are, of course, hiding their connection to the nomads?

YES SINKHOLESSSSSSS :)

*pumps fist* THIS IS SO GREAT!!!!!! (excuse my caps lock - I'm a very exuberant person!)
I love it! We could even go so far as to figure out why the nomads are so hated. Is it because they did something bad in the past? Or is it more because they... OOH OH OH OH!!!! MAYBE THE NOMADS ARE KINDA LIKE THE ISRAELITES IN THE DESERT!!!! Like, ya know, the nomads believe in an all-powerful God and they're shunned for it, especially by the bigger cities, which don't like that they have to live in a desert and blame God for it?
Or, if we don't want to have such blatant allegory, we could do something a bit more subtle: The nomads have been seen doing weird religious rites and people are scared they're going to cast spells on everyone.

Either of those options could work! They'd both allow for interesting themes and discussions between the nomads and the small settlements as they come to understand each other better. The first idea would allow for some high-level themes like "How do you respond when a good God is responsible for something unpleasant?", while the second would allow for more subtle themes like "How can you learn to understand someone you're afraid of/judgmental of, whether you come to agree with them or not?"

Or I might be thinking about this too much like a world for a novel. XD I don't know how thematically deep you expect the CS to be, lol.

message 13: by Denali, Throne Warden (new)

Denali Christianson ~Semi-active~ (denalichristianson) | 176 comments Mod
Lol I literally love this!!! We could probably do both, honestly. I'm definitely imagining a hybrid dystopian-fantasy world in all this, so maybe there's a group of elites that know what's really going on, so they spread propaganda throughout the big cities about how dangerous the nomads are, since they "deal in magic." But then there can be other characters who are struggling with other questions. I honestly love it when CS's get to be deep and gritty. The main point of a CS isn't to rp but to stretch your author muscles - so the more thematically deep, the better!
We could plan to have some characters who are struggling with deep questions, and some others who don't know what's going on. It's completely up to the participants in the end though.

YAYYYYY!!!! I think black markets are these awesome things that more stories desperately need!!! Shall we start creating characters? Your options for characters would be a human, an elf, or a nomad. You can also create a people group that no one knows about and reveal them as time goes on...

Kye Ryvers (kye_ryvers) | 93 comments OOOHHHH is this a role play???

message 17: by Denali, Throne Warden (new)

Denali Christianson ~Semi-active~ (denalichristianson) | 176 comments Mod
Kind of! It's more like writing chapters of a story with an emphasis on practicing writing skills (think fancy rp for cool people!) Basically, rp it but don't be afraid to go gritty with it. If you want to practice a trope or something else for writing, then BY ALL MEANS PLEASE DO!!! The idea of this is that by the end we have a patchwork of stories from different character povs so that if we wanted to we could turn it into a publishable book! (yes. Translate what I just said: it's a rp.) XD

message 19: by Kye (new)

Kye Ryvers (kye_ryvers) | 93 comments Noice!! Do we get to make our own characters? I was apart of a Wingfeather rp once that got abandoned and I rlly liked my character. Oh, wait, is this Wingfeather or just another rp?

message 20: by Denali, Throne Warden (new)

Denali Christianson ~Semi-active~ (denalichristianson) | 176 comments Mod
Yes! You get to make your own characters. No, it's not a Wingfeather rp. We're doing a fantasy rp, kinda starting from scratch, and the premise can be found in the above very complicated comments from a bunch of fantasy nerds geeking out! XD
If you want, we could start a Wingfeather rp! Where were you doing the old rp? Were you ever a part of the Ban Rona Book Club forum that closed down last year?
