I actually think of him with at least a mustache if not a beard, like a Gandalf, even if that's not the description in the book. Maybe I'm subconsciously thinking of Jose Ferrer, because he played a Dreyfus character in "I, Accuse". Actually, in the book, he seems to have a bulge of neck fat over the back of his collar, but I've put that out of my mind.

Very plausible, and unlike William Conrad, alive to star in a film or tv adaptation.

Since the Revelation Space universe is full of mashup languages like Canasian and Russlish, I figure every group got off Earth and mixed a lot in the 400 years of future history. "Dreyfus" is a Western name but he needn't be so. I took him to be a mix of several races, like Louis Wu of Niven's Known Space. China has a whole lot of population to send to space, so I figured he'd be plurality Chinese with a mix of other races. The obsessive nature reminds me of John Wick and Keanu Reeves is part Chinese (along with native Hawaiian, English, Irish, and Portuguese), so about like Reeves with perhaps slightly more prominent Asian features.

I am trying my best to reimagine Dreyfus has Forrest W, but I’m past the halfway mark and I’m kind of in love with my Brendan Greeson version of him. FW would make a great Dreyfus though.
I do have a hard time imagining FW as fat.

Currently showing on MeTV if you get that station. I have been watching them off and on as I like the way he looks like a regular guy you would run into in a bar instead of a glamourous actor.

I don't know if I see him this way, but he felt to me a lot like Philip Seymour Hoffman in A Most Wanted Man.

He's always looked like Stephen Rea to me.
Def Stephen Rea too. Something world-weary and beaten down but forceful and also charming on occasion.
I reckon Reynolds lifted DI Rebus for inspiration. Ken Stott would do a very good job of this.
