Perks Moderator | 594 comments                                 ~BINGO Mini Challenge~

This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players.

◈ Books with a read date between February 14 - February 28, 2015 count
◈ As a team, get "BINGO" by reading books for five squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to create a line (there are 12 possible lines)
◈ Only one book per square
◈ For each line completed, your team receives a "BINGO Bonus" of being able to chose one card in any hand for the duration of the challenge (Feb 1 - April 30) that you can claim double points for
◈ Books used for BINGO do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ "Free Space" square means you can read any book
◈ The usual book length rules apply, Books must be more than 160 pages in length and Children's books and Graphic Novels can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 40,000 words using arbookfind.com
◈ Team spreadsheets have been updated with a BINGO tab so that you can track your books and claim your bingo lines

Notes
◈ Current Best Seller: We will accept any major best selling links, just provide the link with the book. A good website to use is http://www.bookdepository.com/bestsel...
◈ Colours on the cover need to be the predominant colour. If unsure you can post here for a ruling
◈ It is one book per square, but remember that lines overlap, so in total to cover all the bingo squares is 25 books

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments This looks good. Just a quick question. For books set in Europe, does that exclude the UK or could you use a book set in the UK for either?

message 4: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments No, it needs to be mainland Europe because we do have UK as a separate square

Perks Moderator | 594 comments A word about genres....

When you go to the book page on Goodreads, on the right hand side is "genres". The genres listed here are acceptable. So one book may be listed as "romance", "fiction" and "fantasy" and then it is up to you to work out which square works best for you.

As these genres aren't always the most reliable, if you think your book's genre isn't listed you can post it here for a ruling (I check how it is marketed by the publisher and listed at some libraries to determine genre)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments So a book like Naked in Death could be used for either mystery or romance?

message 7: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Beth (Ducky) wrote: "So a book like Naked in Death could be used for either mystery or romance?"

Or fiction
:)

message 8: by kierra (new)

kierra (karmania) There are two slots of "First in the Series" and two of "Current best seller". The books for each same slot must be different, correct?

message 9: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Yes, correct

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

So, for example, would Unbelievable work as a green cover?

message 11: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments I just checked with my brains trust (i.e. husband) for a second opinion, so I'm going to say yes to green :)

message 12: by Micaela (new)

Micaela | 111 comments Hi, everyone! I have a question.

After reading books for five consecutive squares, Can you give me an example of how to complete this two columns: "Date Points Claimed", "Hand/Month Points Claimed For"?

Thank you :)

message 13: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Thats where the captains record when they have claimed the points. So if you wanted to claim double points for a card in hand 8 and you want to claim it today, you would enter 17 Feb under "date points claimed" and "Feb Hand 8" under the other column

message 14: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 529 comments Ok, I just have a question in order to clarify something. Can we claim books that we have read for the Uno challenge and if they fit for a bingo square for both or do we have to read different books for each. I am just a tad confused as to if we get credit for both Uno and Bingo for the same book.

message 15: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (last edited Feb 17, 2015 01:26AM) (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Books for bingo do not need to be separate books you are claiming for your UNO hands, but only books read between Feb 14 and 28 count for bingo

message 16: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 908 comments Question: For the square with "first published in non-english language", does the book have to be published in English as well, or is it enough with just the non-english language?

message 17: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Just first published as non-English is fine. It doesn't need to have been published in English

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Regarding the cover color...does it matter if it's the front or back cover as long as it is the predominant color?

message 19: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments We go with front covers (as we can't verify back covers)

message 20: by Micaela (new)

Micaela | 111 comments Hi everyone! I have another question :P

Can my team use Ceremony for "read any award nominee or winner" (row4 column3)?
Because in 1983 it was a "Shamus Award Nominee for Best PI Hardcover"

message 21: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Sure can :)

message 22: by jingles (new)

jingles Karen, in Bingo for the genre categories, does that genre need to be listed on the book's home page in order to count?

message 23: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Yes, but as these genres aren't always the most reliable, if you think your book's genre isn't listed you can post it here for a ruling (I check how it is marketed by the publisher and listed at some libraries to determine genre)

message 24: by jingles (new)

jingles Great. Thank you!

message 25: by Micaela (new)

Micaela | 111 comments I need a ruling: can we use this book for black cover?

The Glass Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy, #2) by Charlie N. Holmberg

message 26: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hmmm... I will give you benefit of the doubt and say yes

I'm still a little confused as to what to put. We just finished a vertical line, but I'm not sure what I should put (Team X-Men).

message 28: by jingles (new)

jingles Quick question -

Can we use this for a white book cover?

Need (Need, #1) by Carrie Jones

message 29: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments works for me jingles!

message 30: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Kayla - Maybe check out another spreadsheet to see how they have done it. Here is the link for Betty Boop:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

That may help? If not let me know. On the BINGO tab of your spreadsheet you should have your vertical line "date completed" in column L. Then when you decide on a card you want to claim double points for, mark the "Date Points Claimed" in column M and the Month and Hand Number in column N. Then on your month tab, double the points for that card (e.g. 60 points for a Wild instead of 30)

message 31: by Micaela (new)

Micaela | 111 comments After completing a line... Can we chose any card for double points or should it be one of the 5 that complete the bingo line? can we use a card read before 2/14?

message 32: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Hutchinson (kaylahutchinson) Karen wrote: "Kayla - Maybe check out another spreadsheet to see how they have done it. Here is the link for Betty Boop:

Perfect! Thank you Karen!

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments We have completed Horizontal 1. I'm not sure what the two columns next to it mean https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 34: by Laura (last edited Feb 24, 2015 05:48PM) (new)

Laura Karen could we please have a ruling on Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate for a black cover?

message 35: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments Horizontal 2 is also finished

message 36: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hi Beth - did you check out the spreadsheet example above?

message 37: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hi Micaela - it can be any card from any time during the challenge

message 38: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hi Laura - I just asked some work colleagues and the consensus is yes, it can be black ;)

message 39: by Laura (new)

Laura thanks Karen!!

message 40: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments Thanks, Karen! I figured it out now.

message 41: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 25, 2015 09:36AM) (new)

Hi Karen, would Night Myst (Indigo Court, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn or The Bullet by Mary Louise Kelly work as black? And would one of the covers of Pride and Prejudice (sorry, I can't figure out how to link a specific edition) work as white or pink?

message 42: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments The bullet is ok for black (the other is more blue)
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
is ok for white. I don't see a pink version, (if you know the ISBN just throw that into the search box to link the cover)

message 43: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Would this book count for a black cover?
Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

message 44: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Yes, that's fine

message 45: by Micaela (new)
