Where's My Joey?
One positive - It's nice to be able to get the list up right away during the first round this year.
Challenge for 2022 is here: https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...
You can start adding books to your bookshelf now! :)
You can start adding books to your bookshelf now! :)
Well, this is a first for me. It looks like The Survivors was first published in September 2020 in Australia. The US release was February 2021, so it still qualifies for the Choice Awards. However, I received an early copy and read it in October 2020. So, I read a Choice Awards nominee, but it doesn't fit in our challenge guidelines because I read it too early.

I am going to either change the date or put a second read date. Not because I care if I have an extra book there, but I want a record of all the GRCA I have read.
(haha, don't kick me out of the club!)
I also agree that the new format does allow a lot of time to look at all the nominees and prepare my shelf. I think I have read every summary for every book now!
I was thinking the same thing, Vicki. I hate messing with my stats. It gives me an extra book read this year if I change or add the date, but I also want to track how many GRCA I've read. I'm thinking since it was a NetGalley I will add instead of change. Bad enough I have to mess up my GR dates, I don't want to start changing my NG dates too.

Yes, I will either add a read OR just leave it and put it on the shelf with the old date. That way it will be on the shelf, but just not count for the actual challenge.
That's how I have it now - on the shelf, but with the old date. I haven't decided if I'll add an extra date or not yet. It sort of feels like cheating, but at the same time it bothers me that if I look at my challenge it's not there. This might be a little OCD-ish, lol.
Change the date of the challenge Kristie to include Dec 31st 2020?
That way you can change the arc read date to be included in the challenge but it can all still be in the correct year.

Oops! Quite a big mistake lol
I'll sort it :)

I was trying to figure out how many categories we had this year vs. last year. Last year was 20 and you had 16 categories, but I only knew of three that were missing, so I compared what you had with last year's list is how I found it.

We should have known Lynn would work some magic for a solution.
Yes, except I read mine in October! Not sure I want to adjust the entire challenge to suit my reading. lol

Kenneth wrote: "Is it alright if I put something else on the challenge list? bcs i want to combine it with my 2022 read list."
I'm not quite sure your meaning, but I think you're saying can you add non goodreads awards books to this groups challenge?
If so, then no. The challenge is to just about GR awards books.

Kenneth, all the books in the challenge are chosen by Goodreads and are in the Choice Awards. We don't add them ourselves.

He was in the final round in two categories, but didn't win.
I was surprised, Deborah. He took second and third place.
I have to say that in the horror category, I was disappointed. I read the three top books. I dnf The Final Girl Support Group and it won! I thought Later (by Stephen King) was good, but my vote went to the third choice, which was The Last House on Needless Street.
For mystery and thriller, I again read the top three and thought all three were good, but didn't vote for any of them. I read seven from this category and had a hard time choosing, but went with We Begin at the End.
So, even though I love Stephen King, I did not vote for either of his books that were nominated this year. I thought they were both good, but not his best, and I enjoyed other books more. Seems other people felt the same and some probably just really loved other books as well.

So, even though I love Stephen King, I did not vote for either of his books that were nominated this year. I thought they were both good, but not his best, and I enjoyed other books more. Seems other people felt the same and some probably just really loved other books as well.

Particularly if they've read none of the books in a category, they may just vote for an author they like and Stephen King is very popular and well known.
That's why I was so surprised he didn't win.
Yes, I understood what you were saying, Deborah. People definitely do vote for books that look good to them, but they haven't read them yet, especially for popular authors. So, I wasn't disagreeing.
I was guessing that he didn't win this year because either some people that read the books didn't love them and therefor didn't vote for them and/or so many people just loved another book. I guess what I'm thinking is that if someone loves King they might vote for him, but if they really enjoyed a different book, then they'd vote for that instead. Just thinking about why he didn't win this year on the popularity vote is all. (And pointing out how I voted as a King fan for reference or comparison.)

That happens to me too, Vicki. It is very frustrating. It seems like they link a certain edition and if you originally added it as a different edition from the one linked, when you try to add it to a shelf it adds a duplicate. This is an issue with the choice awards every year.

I have 21 nominees on my TBR as well.
And with the 6 books i have already read that gives me 32 on my GRCA shelf for this year.
Not too shabby!
Nice! I have read 16 (3 winners) and have 43 all together on my challenge shelf. So, 27 still on either my to-read or maybe-read shelves.
Did you vote for any of your winners? I did not. As a matter of fact one of the winners that I read was a dnf for me at 59%. I don't have many of those. I'm not sure I want to try it again. My GR friends gave it an average rating of 3.24, so I know I'm not alone. The other two I really enjoyed and gave them each 4 stars. I just liked something else in those genres better.

It isn't my usual genre but I really enjoyed it. I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down.

If you do audiobooks, I highly recommend you this book that way

I intentionally did not read Project Hail Mary because everyone seemed to love The Martian by the same author and I did not. I thought there was too much math/science included and it pulled me out of the story. I thought the overall story was good, but all the stats really affected my enjoyment of it. I may still give Project Hail Mary a try, but I'm still not sure.
Jayme - I also read The Last Thing He Told Me and Malibu Rising. I enjoyed them both, but didn't vote for either.

It also has lots of math and science. I liked it, but didn't vote for it. I voted for Fugitive Telemetry
I did vote for Broken and The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country

Science Fiction - 5
Humor - 4
Non Fiction - 2
Fantasy - 1
Historical Fiction - 1
Childrens - 1
Poetry - 1
And I DNFed The Dictionary of Lost Words in Historical Fiction.
That's what putting me off it, Deborah. I've heard that it has science and math, but some people have said it's less the focus this time and more in the background? Then again, a lot of people said it didn't bother them at all last time or they just skimmed those parts last time, so I'm not sure I believe that it wouldn't bother me this time.

I wouldn't reccomend it for anyone who didn't like the Martian. I thought the Martian was much better and I liked the science in the Martian and even thought the movie skipped some of it, but there were places in this one that I thought they were wasting time on the math and even skimmed some of it. I didn't love the ending and would have preferred it be more linear.

The group challenge is to read as many nominees and award winners of the Goodreads Choice Awards 2021 as possible.
Challenge instructions - Easy step by step instructions put together by Kristie:
Creating Your Shelf
To participate in the Choice Awards Challenge, you will need to have a special shelf dedicated to the challenge. To do this, go to your bookshelf (click on “my books” to get there). Below your list of bookshelves on the lefthand side of the page, click on “add shelf”. Chose a name for your shelf that will let you know it is your challenge shelf (whatever name you want), Save the shelf.
Adding Books to Your Challenge Shelf
Check out the nominees and award winners below and add the ones you want to read/read to your challenge shelf. There are a couple of ways to do this. Please note that you can choose to add the book any one of the three ways below, just choose the way that you find easiest. You do not have to do all three.
To start with, you can to go to the books page. To select a book you click on “Want to Read” directly below the picture of the book cover. Then, from the book page:
* You can hover your curser over the little green picture that looks like books right next to the “Want to Read” icon. This will cause a drop down menu to appear and you simply check off the shelf that you have assigned to the challenge.
* If you have already read the book or added it to your “to-read” shelf, then below the book information there will be a section titled “My Review”. Within this section, you can see what bookshelves you have added the book to and just under the list of bookshelves you can click on “edit shelves”, which will cause a drop down menu to appear and again you simply check off the shelf that you have assigned to the challenge.
If you have already added the book to your bookshelf, you can add it to the challenge from your bookshelf:
* If you look under the column titled “shelves” next to the book you want to add to the challenge, it will list the shelves that the book is currently on. Just below the list of shelves, you can click “edit” and a drop down menu to appear and again you simply check off the shelf that you have assigned to the challenge.
Joining the Challenge
Next go to the challenge page HERE
Enter your goal and the bookshelf to which you'll add the nominees and award winners (the one you just created above). Make sure to copy the shelf name exactly. Save again!
Participating
This is the best part! To participate all you need to do is read the books you have chosen! After you have read a book, make sure to mark it as read.
If the book is marked as read between January 1st, 2021 (yes 2021 is correct, because you already might have read some of the nominees / winners) and December 31st 2022 and you have added it to your challenge shelf, it will automatically count toward this challenge.
Trouble-shooting
If you read your book and it did not count towards your challenge, there are a couple of things you can do.
First, make sure that you have added the book to your assigned shelf.
Next, make sure that you have set the “read” date accurately. When you mark a book as read you can set the date. Usually, it will automatically assign the read date to the day you mark it off, but occasionally this doesn’t happen. If you’re having trouble, just make sure you set the “read” date to “today”.
