Beyond Reality discussion

Post here if you are reading or planning to read Foundation by Isaac Asimov. No spoilers, please!

We have a copy and I'm planning to read it, but I have some library books to get to first before I have to return them. Later in the month!

I'm reading Foundation for the third time. I've also been watching the Apple plus Foundation series which takes many liberties from the books. I like the series and it is much better than some have said, notably Paul Krugman. I'll quote some of what he said.

"The “Foundation” trilogy had a huge impact on my teenage self. For those who’ve never read it, it’s about social scientists who use their knowledge to save galactic civilization. I wanted to be Hari Seldon, the brilliant mathematician who leads the effort; this economics thing was as close as I could get.

“Foundation” might seem unfilmable. It mostly involves people talking, and its narrative inverts the hero-saves-the-universe theme that burns many acres of CGI every year. The story spans centuries; in each episode everything appears to be on the brink, and it seems as if only desperate efforts by the protagonists can save the day. But after each crisis, Seldon’s prerecorded hologram appears to explain to everyone what just happened and why the successful resolution was inevitable given the laws of history."

I’ve read this at least twice and do not plan to reread it, but will be following the discussion. I don’t have Apple+ TV but might have to consider getting it, since Foundation has always been one of my favorite SF tales/series.

There are ways to get Apple TV+ for a free trial period (3 months) which is worth it to access Ted Lasso (S1 & S2) and Foundation (S1).

Otherwise I think it’s only $5.99/month?

It's been a while but I still remember the story. I will follow along.

Thanks! I know it’s not much, but I want to do it when I know I will have time to watch. We have not been watching much of anything since the end of summer—too many conflicts and other priorities.
