Even as a kid I always wanted to go to Russia. But in the 80s that was a slim possibility. And too bad I didn't go when I could... cuz right now might not be so good a time either.

I read Rashōmon and Seventeen Other Stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa set in Japan, a country I've have been wanting to visit for years.
I just finished The Passion by Jeanette Winterson of England, which I'd like to visit. Kind of funny that I (from the USA with some English ancestry) have visited China, Peru, Denmark, Hungary et al but never England.
June PS: I'm now reading a novel by an Irish writer which is also on the 1001 list, That They May Face The Rising Sun by John McGahern. I would like to visit Ireland also.

I haven't read that one yet but did read Carpentier's The Lost Steps, which is set in the Amazon region. I found it rather challenging to get through, partly because Carpentier was a musicologist and there are a lot of references to obscure musical information and theory.

The Kingdom of This World is very interesting. It's about the first successful slave revolution in the Americas. It took place on the island of Hispanola in what is now Haiti, between 1791 and 1804. The story is told mostly from the point of view poor slave.
