Sue | 2718 comments Once again, I'm blown away by Chris Bohjalian's work.

Mary Deerfield is 24 years old, a young wife living in Puritan Boston in 1662. This was the era of the Salem witch trials, by no means limited to Salem.

Life here is harsh, made far harsher by the unstinting superstition, cruelty and evil disguised as the church. Mary's husband is physically and emotionally abusive, and she seeks a divorce following the rules allowed by the church.

But...who but a witch would accuse her husband in such a way?

Chilling look into human nature.

Amy | 12915 comments I have been so excited for this one, and missed it twice recently. It even would have brought me back home to Boston, even if I missed the witches in October. Your five star review makes me so excited. I’m going to get to it soon for sure!

Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 797 comments I'll try this one too. I find Bojalian intriguing for being a man who usually writes successfully in a female POV. I've loved some of his books but also had a few DNFs and 1 stars. He's definitely prolific!
