Time for that end of the year wrap up! I know there are a few weeks left but getting this up now allows time for answers and allows us to see if there are changes to be made for the next year.

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments 1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2021 reading goal?
Only 3 away from my goal, so I anticipate exceeding it!
2. Number Of Books You Read:
At 72 now, goal was 75, hoping to hit 80.
3. Genre You Read The Most From:
Fantasy of course! Although this year has been much more varied than years past.
4. What were your favorite books this year?
ADSOM, No Exit, House in the Cerulean Sea
5. What were your least favorites?
Space Between Worlds, Sharks in the Time of Saviors
6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone?
House in the Cerulean Sea
7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone?
Read more non-fic this year. The most impactful for me personally being The Dead Moms Club.
8. Did you discover any new genres or authors?
Kristen Hannah, Fredrick Backman, TJ Klune
9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
NOS4A2 - I set it aside after struggling through it for several months. Enjoyed it when I was reading, but once I would sit it down, it was hard to find motivation to return to it.
10. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
Several pre-orders already placed for next year, but the soonest to be released is the next Every Heart a Doorway book!
11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year?
Deathless Divide is on my December TBR and would wrap up another series for me.
12. Best Series Starter of 2021:
A Darker Shade of Magic.. realizing that aside from re-reads, I didn't actually start very many new series this year.
13. Best Sequel of 2021:
A Court of Silver Flames - by far my favorite in that series.
14. Best Series Ender of 2021:
Aurora's End
15. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2021 But Will Be Your #1 Priority in 2022?
Dune - I really want to read it and definitely before I watch the movie.
16. Book(s) you are looking most forward to in 2022 whether they are new releases or just things you are intending to read
Finally, finally getting to The Hobbit and the LoTR books!
17. Going forward, is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?
Nope
18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?
Mainly the personal challenge posts and seeing what everyone is reading and what challenges everyone is participating in.
19. As far as challenges go, are there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favorite challenge we currently run?
I didn't get involved in many challenges this year but in past years I particularly loved the bingo style games.
20. There hasn't been as much participation in Book of the Month this past year. Is this something you want to see continued and if so what would make you more involved? The Mods were thinking of changing it to bimonthly instead of monthly to give more time for people to read and discuss what do you think?
Definitely like the idea of bi-monthly, but I'm also one who rarely participates in BOTM's in any groups as I usually have a too long TBR planned every month >.<

You absolutely have to read the Hobbit Heather! Do you think you might get more involved with BotM if we changed it to bimonthly? Gives a little more wiggle room on those monthly TBRs. Thank you so much for your answers! You've read some fabulous books this year

1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2021 reading goal? Yes I have far exceeded it currently at 129/90 Would love to hit 150 but I dont think that will happen

2. Number Of Books You Read: Currently at 129

3. Genre You Read The Most From: Fantasy in all its various forms and age ranges.

4. What were your favorite books this year? The Rose Code Magic for Nothing A Court of Wings and Ruin How to Defeat a Demon King in Ten Easy Steps Druid Vices and a Vodka Lost Talismans and a Tequila Damned Souls and a Sangria Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped Silence Fallen Crooked Kingdom King of Scars Rule of Wolves Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner White Hot Wildfire Sweep with Me Okay more than I intended but I just couldnt narrow it down

5. What were your least favorites? This was my only 1 star book Poisoned but here are a few 2 stars that really disappointed me If You Could See Me Now Wicked Saints Mexican Gothic All These Bodies Stone Cold Touch Every Last Breath

6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone? The Rose Code one of the best written historical fictions I've read.

7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone? I don't read much nonfiction and Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner was an excellent book way outside of my norm

8. Did you discover any new genres or authors? I already read pretty much anything so no new genres for me. I spent a lot of the year trying to catch up on some series and author backlogs so not really any new favourite authors for me.

9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? Nothing right now that I wont get done before the new year

10. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for? I just need to go pick up Risen but that was the last one I was waiting on for this year

11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year? Finish A Heart So Fierce and Broken and Shadows of Self beyond that hoping to read The Henna Artist and Winterkeep for sure

12. Best Series Starter of 2021: of the new release variety Six Crimson Cranes followed by The Helheim Princess that actually comes out next year. Of books I started this year the best was Burn for Me

13. Best Sequel of 2021: Of the new release variety it depends if you want to call Rule of Wolves a sequel or a series ender, otherwise it goes to Last Guard. Of the books I read in general any of the Guild Codex counts here but I'd probably have to pick Druid Vices and a Vodka. Another good choice would be White Hot

14. Best Series Ender of 2021: The only new release true series ender I read was The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks and it was wonderful. Outside of new releases my fave was Damned Souls and a Sangria

15. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2021 But Will Be Your #1 Priority in 2022? I am going to finish Kate Daniels finally as I was supposed to finish it this year but I got sidetracked by Ilona Andrew's Hidden Legacy series instead

16. Book(s) you are looking most forward to in 2022 whether they are new releases or just things you are intending to read. New release wise I am looking forward to the new unnamed book by S.A. Chakraborty, Storm Echo The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea The Long-Forgotten Winter King and anything else guild codex that comes out, The Dragon's Promise, the next yet unnamed Murderbot book, I'm sure there are more but the book I am most excited for is Spelunking Through Hell

message 5: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments 1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2021 reading goal?
No (279/488 now, maybe I read 10-30 books more till the end of the year).

2. Number Of Books You Read:
279 + 7 (currently reading and planning to finish soon)

3. Genre You Read The Most From:
Fantasy

4. What were your favorite books this year?
The Poppy War, Gods of Jade and Shadow, Empire of Storms, The House in the Cerulean Sea

5. What were your least favorites?
Fangirl, Fateful Magic (almost the whole series)

6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone?
The House in the Cerulean Sea

7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone?
I think I've already tried many different genres and there are some genres I don't like reading and don't read, so no.

8. Did you discover any new genres or authors?
Green Witchcraft as a genre, authors: J. Scott Savage, Robin LaFevers, Maureen Johnson, S.J. Kincaid, T.J. Klune

9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
There are plenty but I don't need to finish any of them, just taking it easy :D

10. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
Nope

11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year?
I'll just go with whatever my mood throws at me. No plans.

12. Best Series Starter of 2021:
Black Sun

13. Best Sequel of 2021:
Tower of Dawn

14. Best Series Ender of 2021:
Mortal Heart

15. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2021 But Will Be Your #1 Priority in 2022?
It changes all the time but for now it's maybe re-reading the first 3 books in The Stormlight Archive and starting the 4th one.

16. Book(s) you are looking most forward to in 2022 whether they are new releases or just things you are intending to read
Actually this year is very different for me as I decided to take it easy on reading, no planning, no looking for new releases, just going with the books I want to read at the moment.

17. Going forward, is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?
More board games please! So much fun!

18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?
Mostly people, atmosphere, challenges and the way we discuss books.

19. As far as challenges go, are there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favourite challenge we currently run?
I love the variety and the amount is just right (not overwhelming), I love board games.

20. There hasn't been as much participation in Book of the Month this past year. Is this something you want to see continued and if so what would make you more involved? The Mods were thinking of changing it to bimonthly instead of monthly to give more time for people to read and discuss what do you think?
It's ok either monthly or bi-monthly. I also try to participate but somehow end up either not having the book for the current month or just not the right mood to start.

Okay apparently I really need to read The House in the Cerulean Sea if you both are naming it as a favourite of the year!
What Green Witchcraft books did you love this year Elena? Nothing wrong with no plans for the rest of the year and taking it easy with scheduling books in general! Also I totally get not being in the right mood sometimes to start a book.
I think we will have to start a thread for Stormlight Archive as I am hoping to start it next year at some point as well and it would be fun to have a place to discuss it.

message 7: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments 1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2021 reading goal?
I'm on track to probably exceed my goal.

2. Number Of Books You Read:
Currently I'm at 438 books read this year

3. Genre You Read The Most From:
Probably fantasy of various sub-genres

4. What were your favorite books this year?
There are a lot of good books that I read this year. A few examples are:
In Death
Kate Daniels
Hidden Legacy
Restaurant to Another World
The Tea Dragon
The Poppy War

This isn't even touching the great stuff that only got 4 stars

5. What were your least favorites?
Hot Ice
Crow Mountain
The Sanatorium
Forbidden Passage
Lockdown
Eat Your Heart Out
The Ruins
Scott Pilgrim Color Collection Vol. 1
West

6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone?
I feel weird about making recommendations. Take a look at what I read, if I gave it a good score and you feel inspired by it then give it a go.

7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone?
Probably. This is a weird one for me. Due to challenges I'm usually dabbling in things outside of my wheelhouse.

8. Did you discover any new genres or authors?
Not so much on the new genres but a several new authors. I'm always picking things up at random and reading them.

9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
Two. The Wandering Inn Volume 6 and 8-Bit Theater. Both are massive online media that I want to finish reading.

10. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
Not particularly but I don't really follow a lot of new releases.

11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year?
Magic Triumphs

12. Best Series Starter of 2021:
The one thing that is popping into my head is probably Poppy War. This book came in feeling like YA and not fully grabbing me. It then flipped the script and took me on this dark, angry, journey I never saw coming.

13. Best Sequel of 2021:
Keeping the in the same vein as before, maybe because it's on my brain, The Dragon Republic

14. Best Series Ender of 2021:
I didn't reach the end of many series this year so as cliche as this is, The Burning God

15. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2021 But Will Be Your #1 Priority in 2022?
I wouldn't say it's top priority but I want to get back into Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon. I shelved it earlier this year because of a timed challenge and just never really got back to it. Probably also Didn't I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life now that my library has more volumes.

16. Book(s) you are looking most forward to in 2022 whether they are new releases or just things you are intending to read
Probably more Bofuri and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear. These are my ultimate comfy light novels right now that I really enjoy.

17. Going forward, is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?
Nothing I can think of.

18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?
I like the challenges and seeing some of the books that I might not normally read

19. As far as challenges go, are there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favourite challenge we currently run?
For a non-challenge group there is a good selection here. I like the board game we started this year and the quarterly challenge. The one with spelling and tasks.

20. There hasn't been as much participation in Book of the Month this past year. Is this something you want to see continued and if so what would make you more involved? The Mods were thinking of changing it to bimonthly instead of monthly to give more time for people to read and discuss what do you think?
Alright, I feel a bit sheepish in regards to this question. When I first started joining groups on Goodreads I would make it a point to always read the book of the month but as time went along I slowly started doing this less and less. Between this and things like PifM I'd find that I'd start all sorts of new series but never go any where with them. Then as I started joining more and more groups it just became a logistical thing. If I were to read every BotM and buddy read I'd never have time to read anything that I want to read myself. I now take an approach of if it's something that interest me, it's something I can get from the library easily, if I'm in the mood for it, and I have the time I'll pick it up. As you can kind of guess this is not something that happens a lot. I'm not sure if there is a change that would make me suddenly start participating more. I've just got so much stuff that I am reading at any one time. That being said I'm not opposed to the idea of the bimonthly plan. It gives people a bit more time to get it from the library, fit it into their schedule, etc.

Elena Granger | 1788 comments Yep! Please try to read The House, it's amazing.

I've only read one book (Green Witchcraft + bought more) and found out that it's definitely something I love and enjoy and want to bring more into my life.
Green Witchcraft A Practical Guide to Discovering the Magic of Plants, Herbs, Crystals, and Beyond by Paige Vanderbeck The Green Witch Your Complete Guide to the Natural Magic of Herbs, Flowers, Essential Oils, and More by Arin Murphy-Hiscock The House Witch Your Complete Guide to Creating a Magical Space with Rituals and Spells for Hearth and Home by Arin Murphy-Hiscock

It's going to be my 3rd re-read of The Stormlight Archive and I still learn something new. So I'm going to be a constant visitor of the thread :D

Totally fair about the BotM Gord! I get that as I cannot read them all from various groups either. Poppy War is one I didnt get to this year that I really meant to so hopefully next year I will join your love for it. As always I enjoy seeing what you are reading and hope you enjoy all your web comic catch up next year!

Loving all the love for the board games, Lili is planning on keeping those going in the new year.

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Kind of replying to everyone's above posts here..

In regard to BoTM, I think I'd be more likely to participate more often with bi-monthly, but also know that I'm so very hit and miss with participating. I really want to focus on finishing series, or starting and completing new series that I've owned for a long time so a lot of it comes down to stuff being on my tbr/ownes or easily accessible and not being series starters that I'm not able to continue on with easily! Also, with starting school and working two jobs, I'm not even sure how much reading I'm going to accomplish yet >.<

Adding some new stuff to my want to read shelf form ya'll's answers though! I own the first two Stormlight books so I'll likely end up in that thread at some point next year - Sanderson is quickly becoming a favorite!

Also have poppy wars on my tbr but not sure if I'll get to it very quickly. It was recommended to me that I read the Rape of Nanking first so going to try to do that.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is so amazing.. I hope you find enjoyment in it as well!

Oooh Heather You're so close to hitting your reading goal! You're doing great! And I'm glad to hear you enjoy the bingos! Those are some of my favorite as well!

And Brittany, 129 is pretty amazing! And I agree, All These Bodies was really disappointing.

Elena 488 is an incredible goal! But 279 is nothing to sneeze at! It's pretty awesome! And I'm glad to hear you enjoy the board games! I will definitely be working on more of those next year!

Gord I have no doubt you will crush your goal! You are a reading machine! Lol. And it's totally fair in regards to the botm. It's meant to be fun so there is no pressure to pick it up every month. I myself am pretty terrible ar reading our own botm 🙈

Congrats on reaching your reading goal Emani! Oh Delirium! I read the first book YEARS ago, but I remember really loving it! I really need to finish that series!

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments 1. Did you or will you reach your 2021 reading goal?
Yes I did!

2. Number of Books You Read?
24. I would have liked to have read more, but sadly, my reading slump plus being very busy with work was not conducive to lots of reading, so I'm just glad I read what I did.

3. Genre You Read The Most From:

In a surprise to exactly no one, it was Fantasy. However most of my favourite reads from this year were either historical fiction or memoirs, which suggests maybe I need to branch out a bit more next year.

4. What were your favourite books this year?

I'll do my top 5: Born a Crime Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
I Am Malala The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai
The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks (Montague Siblings, #3) by Mackenzi Lee

5. What were your least favourite books this year?

Dangerous Remedy (Battalion of the Dead #1) by Kat Dunn
The Bear and the Nightingale (The Winternight Trilogy, #1) by Katherine Arden
The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang
The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab

6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone?

I Am Malala The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

7. Did you read anything outside your comfort zone?

I wouldn't necessarily say it was outside my comfort zone, but I read quite a few more memoirs this year than I usually do, and I really enjoyed it. I actually quite like non-fiction, I really should read more!

8. Did you discover any new genres or authors?

New genres no, but new authors yes! The ones I will definitely be reading more from in the future are Kate Quinn, Madeline Martin and Andrew Cotter.

9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

Ha ha so many! I had a bit of a bad habit this year of picking books up and then not feeling in the mood for them so putting them down. The three I probably most need to finish as I made it a fair way through them but just haven't finished yet are:

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
The Mask Falling (The Bone Season, #4) by Samantha Shannon
Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

10. Is there a new release you're still waiting for?

Since it's the last day of the year, no!

11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year?

I have thankfully finished everything I wanted to before the end of the year!

12. Best Series Starter of 2021?

I realised when doing my End of Year Wrap-Up on my blog that I hated all the series starters I read this year, so I'm afraid I've got nothing for this one!

13. Best Sequel of 2021?

A Psalm of Storms and Silence (A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, #2) by Roseanne A. Brown

14. Best Series Ender of 2021?

The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks (Montague Siblings, #3) by Mackenzi Lee

15. One Book You Didn't Get To In 2021 But Will Be Your #1 Priority In 2022?

It's too hard to pick just one, so I've got a few:

Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #2) by Holly Jackson
Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
The Bronzed Beasts (The Gilded Wolves, #3) by Roshani Chokshi
Rule of Wolves (King of Scars, #2) by Leigh Bardugo

16. Books You Are Most Looking Forward To In 2022?
Gallant by V.E. Schwab
The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn
The American Librarian A Novel of World War II by Madeline Martin
Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

17. Going forward is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?

Not that I can think of!

18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?

I enjoy chatting with you guys!

19. As far as challenges go is there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favourite challenge we currently run?

I don't usually take part in the challenges.

20. I would definitely appreciate BOTM being bimonthly, I want to take part more, but when I'm busy I tend to read less and obviously I want to prioritise my own TBR, I think if it was bimonthly, I'd definitely be more likely to participate more if it was a book I was interested in.

Oh no, that's a shame you didn't like any of your series starters. How many series did you start this year? (I started 15 and I am so ashamed lol)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I started 3, I read The Poppy War, The Bear and The Nightingale and Dangerous Remedy and all three were among my lowest rated books of the year (2 stars for Dangerous Remedy and The Bear and The Nightingale, 2.5 stars for The Poppy War). It's probably a good thing to be honest that I've not committed myself to more series as I still have 38 books on my series to finish shelf! Maybe a resolution for 2022 ha ha!

Oh yeah, I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to series. Except I keep starting series and adding to the number. Lol. It's definitely a good resolution to have though, going through with it is the issue. Lol.

Jo I'm still so happy with the Kate Quinn love!! Can't wait for you to read everything else she writes too.
No new series to continue since you didn't enjoy any of the starters is probably a good thing I'd have to agree. I start way too many myself.
I too need to read Once Upon a Broken Heart in the new year. I also look forward to your thoughts on Rule of Wolves

Ha ha I will make it, whether I succeed with it or not is an entirely different issue....

Yes, she was my favourite new author discovery of the year! We should def do a buddy read of her new one when it comes out later on in the year. I think The Huntress is the last one I have left of hers that's available on Audible as I think The Borgias would probably be a bit too romancey for me. I'd love to read the Rome ones but they don't have those on Audible, maybe I'll try and see if they're available at my library.....

I've been getting much better at dropping series when the first books don't work for me rather than pushing on through like I used to. I always used to feel like I was obligated to finish series if I started them, but life is too short for that and there are too many other books to read!

Will def let you know what I think of Once Upon A Broken Heart and Rule of Wolves. I'd like to try and get to Once Upon A Broken Heart fairly early on this year, but my reading mood has been weird lately, so we'll see how I'm feeling!
