The bought date would work too. :)

If there are no books on your shelf for a given category, you may use something related. For example, if a category was “a car on the cover,” but you had no car covers, you could use a truck or a van or other vehicle on the cover. If in doubt, feel free to ask about a particular substitution.

I'm in for tier 1 . . . quick question: what defines the 'Gothic Genre'? I'm thinking of Abigail Wilson's books specifically . . . would they count?

Yes, those count. I can’t recall the exact definition, but I think Abigail Wilson’s and Joanna Davidson Politano’s books are great examples.

I tried adding a new shelf, now I don't know how to put a book on that shelf. I can't use my "want to read" shelf because there are books on there I don't already own.

I think I am going to have to back out of this one. It is going to take too much time to get it set up. :-(

Lauri, you're welcome to use your want-to-read shelf and select the books you do own when you choose which books to read for the challenge.

To add books quickly to a shelf, when you're on the My Books page and on your Want to Read shelf (on the desktop version), you may select Batch Edit (located next to the "search and add books" box). Give it a second to load and then you can choose the shelf you want to add books to from the drop-down menu that pops up above the list of your books (in this case, the tbr-crusher list you recently created). Then, go through the page and check the little square box by any book you want to add to the list (this will not remove them from your want-to-read shelf; it will only add them also to the new shelf -- you will still only have one copy of the book in your want-to-read list, so you don't have to worry about duplicate books showing up). After you've selected all the books you'd like to add on that page, scroll back to the top and click the "add books to this shelf" button next to the drop-down menu. Depending on how few or many books you checked, this may take a few minutes.

Once that finishes, you may click to the next page of your want-to-read shelf and repeat the process described above.

If you want to participate in this challenge, you're welcome to! If it's too complicated to organize a shelf for it, feel free to skip that part and play along anyway with any books you have lying around. I just won't link up a shelf for you in that case.

If, however, you still want to back out, that is perfectly fine. Do you want to think about it over the next week or so and let me know after Christmas?

I figured it out ! :-) I am in! I started making my list of books, will add more next week when I can see what is on my physical bookshelf (currently not at home). This is the list I will select from.

Do you have any books that feature birds or zoo animals or mustangs (horses, not cars)? Any of those could be considered wild if not in a zoo.

Some examples of books that feature wild animals...

features a wild bird in a key scene or two.

features a crocodile.

features bulls that are not tamed.

featured wild seagulls and a dolphin (and another animal I can't remember -- maybe a walrus??). Any of the Hope Harbor books that have the seagulls would work. I think they've shown up in all the books so far, but my memory's a bit fuzzy on that.

featured wild deer, I think.

featured geese.

This series has a stray cat; since the cat doesn't belong to anyone in particular, I'd accept that as a wild animal. (I might have forgotten the correct order of the series.)
