I just finished The Count of Monte Cristo narrated by Bill Homewood, and I liked the story (but did not love it)-- loved the narration though! I do want to continue to read the classics, but I am open to trying newer stuff for my next listen too.

What I have my eye on right now:

-Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem
-Father Goriot (also narrated by Bill Homewood) by Honore de Balzac
-The Idiot by Dostoyevsky
-A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami
-By Night in Chile by Roberto Bolano
-Ubik by Philip K Dick
-The Death of Ivan Illych by Leo Tolstoy
-A crime story (I haven't picked one) by Elmore Leonard
-A Western story (I haven't picked one) by Elmore Leonard
-Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler

oh gosh I LOVED Motherless Brooklyn but I read it, so I can't say how the audio is but... and I'm not much for the classics... but if you're looking for amazing current audiobooks, I'd recommend:

- Train Dreams and Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson (read by Will Patton)
- All of the Southern Reach Triology books by Jeff Vandermeer (multiple narrators, all amazing)
- Pearl by Josh Malerman
- All the David Joy novels
