Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments IMPORTANT INFO:

◈ This is a 3 month team challenge starting 1 February 2022

◈ At the end of the challenge 30 April 2022 the team with the most points wins!

◈ The team can choose to skip an entire hand to get to the next one, but they are not given a replacement hand. (You can only skip one hand in a month)

◈ Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive)

Hi everyone, Co-Captain here. I've played UNO twice before and its the most fun of all the challenges. I was excited when I saw our group name, Anne of green gables was one of my childhood favourites!

I'm from the UK and I love to read a wide range of genres but my faves are thrillers, horrors and crime.
I've persuaded my sister Klare to join in this year and I'm sure she'll introduce herself at some point.

Feel free to ask any questions regarding the challenge, especially if youve not played before. Its a super easy challenge to work on and the main thing is that we all have fun!

message 13: by Michelle (last edited Jan 16, 2022 12:31PM) (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments I loved Anne growing up, too, Gem! Excited to be on team Avonlea.

This is my second round of captaining for UNO. I tend to read anything and everything, but my favorites are mysteries, historicals of all kinds, and non-fiction.
I live on a small farm in rural Oregon and will mostly be on nights and weekends. Sometimes my internet does not play well with others. The struggle is real out here in the middle of nowhere.

I am going to get us a planning spreadsheet to use. Ideally, you can all claim spots with your books and enter them into the spreadsheet yourselves. If anyone needs help, Gem & I are here for you, but it flows really well if you place your books and then mark them as read on the sheet. Please know that your books could get moved as we need to juggle the hands and maximize points each month. Gem & I will move them to the official spreadsheet for you.

Looking forward to reading with you all and finding great new books to explore. Let us know where you are from, how many times you have played UNO, and what are some of your favorite books and authors. I'm always looking for recommendations.

Gem, here is my challenge shelf link: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'll read just about anything but favorites are fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction. I really got into audiobooks a couple of years ago so I almost always having an audiobook and one or two ebooks going at a time.

Looking forward to this season of UNO and reading with everyone!

Cindy | 153 comments Hello all, I live in Colorado. I work as a pharmacy technician in a hospital although I am currently on maternity leave. I usually read anything and everything. I'm not really a big planner I usually just try to fit my book where it fits but I do plan the color cards when I can. I usually have an audiobook going at the same time as an ebook like Jackie, but I usually only listen to them on my drive too and from work and at work.

Ophélie (ophelied) | 134 comments Hi everyone,

Greetings from Belgium. This will be my second year playing UNO and I'm really looking forward to it. I had so much fun last year and got to meet some lovely people. I'm positive this year will be the same 😊.

I'm mostly active during my breaks at work and a little bit after work, so I'll probably won't be online a lot at the same time as you all.

Until a few years ago I was a mostly physical copy kind a girl, but I've discovered the advantages of an e-reader AND I discovered audiobooks. Going to the gym and doing chores around the house is suddenly very appealing if you can discover "what happens next"...

My most read genres are thrillers, fantasy, romance and general fiction. Either YA or adult. Mostly I read contemporary's, but I'm not averse to historical fiction and classics.

My favorite author for the last several years is Karin Slaughter. I discovered her work kind of late. I assumed her name was a pen-name. Also, she's very popular in Belgium and I usually don't like the works of the (in Belgium) popular ones - Boy was I wrong.

You can find my favorites shelf over here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Hi Gem, that is my shelf!

I prefer the Will Trent series (in order) by Karin Slaughter and her standalones. I did like the Grant County series, but I read them after the Will Trent.

I love Karin Slaughter! My first one was The Good Daughter and then I discovered Will Trent. So good! I haven't started Grant County yet but it's on my list.

Amy | 219 comments Hello, everyone! My name is Amy and I live in the northeast US. I read mostly nonfiction or SFF, but I've been on a Sherlock Holmes kick since finishing the canon last year.

This is my second time playing UNO, so if I mess up or get anything wrong, please tell me so I can fix and avoid doing it again. Also, it doesn't look like there's a link to my UNO shelf, so here it is: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'll be adding some books to the the planning sheet this afternoon. I know I plan on rereading the Illuminae Files (trilogy) and I'll sort out the rest at the same time.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Hi Amy!

I’ve got a few planned reads for February so I’ve added to the SS. Going forward I’ll be a lot more flexible as to what I’m reading, I’m taking part in a few buddy reads over on Instagram, not to mention I’m reading the whole game of thrones series over the course of this year with a group of about 60!
Will be hoping to complete everything I’m reading now before the end of the month ready to start :)

I usually just read whatever naturally leads from one to the next, but I know I have holds coming in from my library so I'm trying to plan around those. They'll be there and I have to read them, so why not read them for this challenge?

Book Update: I added the books of the Illuminae trilogy and the Winterknight trilogy to the planning sheet. Illuminae is a reread (it's a great series; I highly recommend it!) so I know I'll read all of those, but Winterknight seems to have some really negative reviews and I've DNFed super popular series that have looked solid before when they've turned out to be not to my taste. (Outlander comes to mind; by the time I slogged to the end of book one, I actively hated everything about it.) If I quit that series, I plan to remove the books and substitute in the last books of the Warlock Holmes series, which are currently not on the sheet.

Amy | 219 comments Jenny wrote: "How about I plan to read The Cactus by Sarah Haywood for the Three Card? Reason would be the H in Haywood. Just checking if I am getting this right :-)"

If the reason is really clear cut like that, you can probably just add it to the planning sheet. Pick a 3 - there are eight left on various hands, at the time of this comment - and put the book there. Make sure you pick your name off the Read By drop down menu and in the Reason column put something like 'Author Name (Sarah Haywood)'.

Then, because books are still might be moved around to fill hands, list where else the book could go in Other Possible Cards column. The Cactus is a standalone/not part of a series so it could be a 0 or it could be a 6 due to the MC's name (Sarah Green) if needed.

I hope this was helpful.

message 41: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Looks green enough to me, Amy! And yes, Jenny, that's exactly right. Adding what else it works for helps Gem & I move books around to fill spots at the end.

Ophélie (ophelied) | 134 comments Michelle wrote: "I'm being a moody reader, so I haven't claimed anything yet. I'll probably take a look at your shelves and start with a reverse or something."

I'm also a mood-reader and I love to plan. Two things that don't go to well together for reading 🤣. I like making lists for my TBR, and then I end up reading other books....

Last year I planned a lot for the uno-challenge. Some of the time it felt more like a chore to read the books on the spreadsheet (which is kind of dumb, cause I could have switched them, but anyway...).

So this year I'll just add to the spreadsheet while I'm reading.

During the first lock-down (back in 2020 😞) the app I used for my personal library crashed. I think I added to many books....🤣
I then used the extra time during lock-down to upload all my books in https://www.librarything.com. You can make collections, add tags.... So I have added tags to my books (for ex. uno1, uno2, unoRed,....) and then added them to a separate collection for UNO. This way I have a nice spread of books to choose from. All kinds of genres, ready to fit my mood at the time.
PS: you can also export from LibraryThing to Excel.... and make spreadsheets.

I've already seen a nice spreadsheet by Gem to organize books for uno. How do you all look for your next great read?
