Use this Topic to discuss books you are reading or that fit the 13th Scavenger Hunt task.

Task 13: Read a book using the theme of 22. (Submitted by SaraSian and Irem).

This is your chance to get creative! Here are a few possibilities to get you started:

The Roaring Twenties (a book published or set in the 20s)
   A book with 22 chapters
2022 – Chinese year of the tiger, International Year of Glass,
International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture

I had the same thought, and am thinking of Claudine's House by "Colette" also published in 1922.

In my 2006 copy of the 1001 book, I find ten other books that were published in 1922: Ulysses, Babbitt, Aaron's Rod, The Last Days of Humanity, Life and Death of Harriet Frean, The Glimpses of the Moon, Jacob's Room, The Enormous Room, The Garden Party (probably the shortest of these), and Amok (also short). It was a good year for literature.

Luke (korrick) Some more ideas for 22:

Atomic number for titanium
Number of cards in a traditional Tarot as well as Occult Tarot decks
Number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet
In French jargon, "22" is used as a phrase to warn of the coming of the police (typically "22, v'là les flics !" (In English: "5-0! Cops!")
In Spanish lottery and bingo, 22 is nicknamed los dos patitos, 'the two little ducks' after its shape

Oh, wow, I have been staring that 22 in the face over on the ATY group for the major arcana challenge and I didn't even see it until you mentioned it! For reference for anyone who would like to match, the 22 major arcana of the Tarot for the most popular Tarot deck are:

The Fool
The Magician
The High Priestess
The Empress
The Emperor
The Hierophant
The Lovers
The Chariot
Strength
The Hermit
Wheel of Fortune
Justice
The Hanged Man
Death
Temperance
The Devil
The Tower
The Star
The Moon
The Sun
Judgement
The World

I don't see why not, though I'm enjoying the more esoteric interpretations of the challenge posted by others.

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I like the idea of finding something related to the Tarot, but I am thinking of going with Jacob's Room - published in 1922. But there might be something with 22 pages or 22 in the isbn... Hrmm!

Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West has a part with a group of wayfarers in which Tarot plays a role.

Also Taylor Swift sings a song called, "22". So anything by Jonathan Swift, Graham Swift, or Elizabeth Taylor.

or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Nine Tailors

Johnny Taylor is a character in Their Eyes Were Watching God

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 104 comments In addition to the books that came out in 1922, there's one that came out in 1722: Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe.

The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italy Calvino actually uses Tarot cards to tell the travellers' stories.

Here's one just for fun -- In 1922 the Model T Ford was the bestselling car and the first to sell more than one million (actually sold 1.3 million globally).

So, you could read Parade's End or The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford.

Luke (korrick) This depends on how willing people are to give up personal info, but perhaps you could read something published the year you were 22.

Currently working on a book in which the author died on the 22nd of February. But I like yours better, because I was 22(.5) on the 22nd of November, 1993.

Hey, I read that in January/ February!
I guess that if you read about 20 books at least one author will be either born or died on the 22nd. Better if you read older books then more will have already died :)

I'm going with having read The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis in January. It was written by Jose Saramago who was born in 1922 in Portugal.

Shereen | 78 comments Whilst uninventive I read Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.

message 42: by Mel (new)

Mel | 23 comments I wanted to choose a book published in 1922 so I read Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. This was enjoyable but wasn't a new favorite. I liked that it was short though, since I'm a little behind in reading around 1 book a month for this scavenger hunt.
