Thank you for highlighting the Daughters of Africa Collection! I only know about 7 of the women included but plan to read as many as possible in the coming year.

Nathacha Appanah - Petit éloge des fantômes
My review (in French)

Hala Alyan - Salt Houses
I am a fan of family generational storylines, especially when they center around women. I thought Salt Houses offered an interesting portrayal of the different ways in which trauma and identity dislocation caused by displacement affects people.

Jane Austen - Emma
A very entertaining and funny comedy of social manners.

Minae Mizumura - An I-Novel"
Valerie, you’ve read such a great variety of books for this challenge. Were you pleased with this one? I own it but somehow have never prioritized reading it.

Thanks Carol, I am very much enjoying this reading channel. I have mixed feelings about An I-Novel: in the beginning I found it slow and a bit boring as there wasn't much of a story to it, but it grew on me as I went along. The book is a reflection on language and identity, so if that is a topic that appeals to you than I would recommend it. But if not, than it isn't the most exciting book to read. For me it was a 3.5 stars.

Great that you are also reading a Mizumura at the moment; I haven't read A True Novel but it sounds interesting. Hope the book will also be a grower, like The I-Novel.

Jacqueline Harpman - Moi qui n'ai pas connu les hommes
I am not a big dystopian reader but I thought I would give it a go with this one because I really like Jacqueline Harpman as a writer. Unfortunately, I didn't really get the story - it was very slow and I felt it ended up going nowhere. I didn't mind that we never learn what led to the dystopian state of the world but would have liked the existential musings which drive most of the book to have a sense, a purpose. I feel like I missed something.

Simone de Beauvoir - Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter
Really enjoyed this memoir. Even though I came out of it not liking de Beauvoir very much - she comes across as quite arrogant - it was fascinating to get such a close up look at the social constraints imposed on bourgeois girls/women in the 1920s

Kati Hiekkapelto - The Hummingbird
This was a failure for me. I appreciate the attempt made by the author to include a social component in this crime fiction (attitudes towards refugees in Finish society). But the plot was uninspiring and the main female character was incredibly irritating and cliche. Not a series I will be continuing.
