Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Anyone have plans for New Years Eve?

message 3: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 360 comments I am not a big fan of New Year's Eve. Last year we ordered Greek Vege Moussaka and this year we'll probably do the same. In pre-Covid times, we went out for lunch.
I generally do a 1000 piece puzzle past Christmas, so I will probably do that again. And read-of course. I'm reading some big books right now.

Will you be paid double-time for the holiday? And will you be able to have some time to yourself on New Year's Day?

message 5: by Christine PNW (new)

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 2 comments We are NYE homebodies. I usually make some appetizers and we graze all evening, along with a bottle of champagne. We will usually turn on one of the NYE shows, like New Year's Rockin' Eve, and have it going in the background. It's pretty quiet around here, to be honest.

I do enjoy starting the new year with a clean slate, though, and especially when it comes to reading!

message 6: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Greek veggie Moussaka and champagne! you are really living it up. I hope you're not too jealous, Cphe. I hope something exciting happens at your work xx

As for me, I plan to start the New Year with Lieutenant Dan! You can too if you like.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband and I aren't party people lol. We've never enjoyed going out on NYE, always stay in and have a lot more fun that way.

This year our daughter is here for a long holiday visit, so we'll be working on a jigsaw puzzle and eating pizza. And we'll all be asleep before midnight - none of us are night owls.

Yep we're a bunch of dull party poopers 😂

message 8: by Jazzy (last edited Dec 29, 2021 06:07PM) (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Ahahaa. Nice to have your daughter there Cozy Pug (I keep accidentally typing Cosy Pub...so you can see what's on my mind).

Wouldn't that be something if you were doing the same puzzle as Rosemarie?

I am a night person. It is now just gone 2 am and i'm still up. I've been up til 4 or so every day during the holidays and get up at 10 or 11.

message 9: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 360 comments Sometimes I think the "party poopers" have the most fun, Cozy Pug!

Tr1sha | 336 comments No plans for NYE - traditionally it was always a family time when I was younger. I’m excited to see the restored tower when Big Ben strikes at midnight tonight, it’s been covered for ages while work was being done. They showed a brief glimpse of it on the lunchtime tv news & it looked beautiful.

I hope everyone has a lovely evening.

message 17: by Cosmic (new)

Cosmic Arcata | 90 comments Well I will probably spend some time on Discord with my children. I don't play games but it is a great way to have a live chat with the family. We are in several states.

I will tell you a story of one of my favorite New Years Eves.

We were new to living in a city. Actually we are from Tennessee and we moved to Philadelphia. My mother in law thought that was a state. Definitely a state of mind. lol. So we had been living out in the suburbs and our lease expired. I convinced my husband to move to a condo in center city. We had never taken the subway. My husband was going to have to do mass transportation if we moved downtown. So to sign the papers we decided that we we go on the train then to the subway. We were like nervous and waiting to be mugged. Nothing very eventful happened. Just an adrenaline rush from the subway. That was the only time it went that fast!!

We moved into the condo on the 27 floor. It was four blocks from city hall. It was a long day with movers and elevators . We had a beautiful city scape of the city looking down Broadway Street and over Little Italy. We went to be early. Later we were waken up by what we thought was gun fire. I told my husband that it was a good thing we were not on street level. It sounded like a war zone. Just what we would imagine after watching too many movies of Life in the City (not a real show). I looked outside and all of Little Italy was lit up with fireworks. I had forgotten that it was New Years Eve!! It was like a scene from Mary Poppins.

The next morning we woke up early to a lot of noise. It was a Mummer's Parade. Nothing that I had ever experienced prepared me for that!! We kept looking down the street imagining that we could see the end. At about 12 we decided to escape and leave. I think when we got back at 4 they were still going.

At the time it was a culture shock and I didn't really get involved. But I would be curious to see it now and understand what was going on.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments I'm enjoying these stories.

Trisha, I will have to look up Big Ben's restoration. I didn't see it in the top stories. Do you live where you can hear it strike the hour?

Cosmic this is great. I don't know what a Mummer's Parade is either.
But apparently if you live in Philly it's not New Year's Day without it!

message 19: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Fireworks are going outside and Forrest Gump is on the telly and i'm getting ready to ring in the New Year with Lieutenant Dan!

message 20: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 360 comments I didn't see any fireworks, but I could hear them in the distance for at least 15 minutes.

Happy New Year from Toronto!

message 21: by Chad (new)

Chad | 66 comments We still have a few fireworks popping off by me. Those crazy kids hahaha. Happy and healthy New Year to you all from New Jersey!

message 22: by Cosmic (new)

Cosmic Arcata | 90 comments Happy New Year! We heard some fireworks and then we got 30 mph winds.

message 23: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Happy New Year Rosemarie, Chad, and Cosmic!

Chad when you said 'we still have a few fireworks popping off by me' did you mean you were the one popping them off? You crazy kid! ;)

I'm not awake yet.

Jim Townsend | 31 comments Jazzy, the Mummers Parade is a New Years Day tradition, which will resume tomorrow because rain is predicted today.

oh i'm sorry Audrey. Once I made some puppets for a children's theatre company and I was quite proud of them, but they weren't as nice as these. I hope you won't get nightmares! Shall I put up a different picture or will it be alright?

message 33: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 360 comments My 10 year old grandson doesn't like clown puppets very much either.
In this case, the teeth are kind of creepy!

message 34: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments But they're only painted on.
My daughter Hope is a clown.
It looks like her kids will follow in her footsteps.

message 35: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 360 comments Cool! One of my older church friends was a clown for many years, but not scary. She still has colourful clothes.

The Penguin John Lennon The Penguin John Lennon by John Lennon

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Orson Wells with Delores del Rio. I find his sandals most bewitching.

message 41: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Daw (luvvie) | 28 comments I find those socked sandals scarier than clowns I have to say. Well done Rosemarie. I am finding Journey to Paradise: Short Stories and Autobiographical Sketches equally weird.

message 42: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Is it weird good? It SAYS you're going to Paradise!

message 43: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Daw (luvvie) | 28 comments Hmmmm. Some bits are weird good. Some are just plain weird.

message 44: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 360 comments I finished reading Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco today, a massive book written in the 80s, and it was generally not a good read at all. It gets generally high ratings on goodreads and is on the Boxall 1001 List, but I was generous in giving it two stars.
It just doesn't compare to War and Peace or The Brothers Karamazov.
I am just so glad to have finished that thing!

message 45: by Jazzy (last edited Jan 08, 2022 04:49PM) (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Well done, Rosemarie! I. haven't had a spare moment to read anything today except information to create posts from. I might take a break and read something tomorrow.

I'm listening to the Jackie album and it's Gilbert O'Sullivan, Get Down... ah I remember him playing the city hall in town and I didn't have a ticket so I stood outside for a while trying to hear if he was playing one of my favourites.
