Jen (jentrewren) | 1114 comments A beautiful book.

Part marine invertebrate zoology, part history (sadly including some links between marine scientists and Hitler), part diving adventure, part ecological warning and some beautiful and very clever art work in photography, water colour and glass. The Blaschkas' glass models found in a Cornell university storage shed are the foundation of the whole book and started the adventure Drew Harvell embarked on. Harvell was captivated by the beauty and intricacy of the glass models and set out to discover which ones could still be found in our oceans today over several years and thousands of miles of diving adventures.

This book is educational, cautionary and above all beautiful.

It is! Would work for the science tag too. Or for anyone doing ATY it would also fit the Glass prompt or the woman in STEM (Drew Harvell is a woman and marine biologist) prompt or a couple of others which I can't remember atm. It's also not that long with heaps of pictures to illustrate the stories and the science is separated for those who are keen (an appendix of extra info) and those who are less so (a brief version in the main text).

A great book to finish the year on (I left a bit for yesterday so I would finish on a good book).

KateNZ | 4099 comments I’ve ordered it from my local indie bookshop - hopefully they can get it this month. This is wholly up my alley and it’ll get passed round my whole geeky family - really grateful for the review! And the photos of the glass creatures that I’ve found online are completely stunning.

Hope you love as much as I did! I'm not very artistic but could sure appreciate the skill involved in those models especially with the equipment and materials they had in those days. I was more interested in the marine side since I was a marine biologist/research diver originally before teaching.
