Ellen | 3511 comments As Vimal Lahori enters the jeweler's shop where he works as a diamond cutter, he is shocked to see three bodies on the floor and a man with a ski cap pulled down over his face brandishing both a gun and a box cutter. Vimal quickly turns to run as the robber fires his weapon fortunately only causing Vimal a superficial wound. Frightened that the killer will follow him, Vimal flees the scene stopping only to call 911 and report the murders. The crime becomes a case for Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs. Their first order of business is to locate Vimal but he has remained hidden, afraid the killer will find him. As 2 more crimes occur the perpetrator becomes known as "The Promiser" because he seems to target happy couples on the brink of marriage.

New York City is shaken, literally, by a series of small tremors that has led to devastating gas leaks and the death of several citizens. Environmentalists are quick to blame a natural energy company that has been drilling in the area. Closed circuit cameras have captured the image of the "Promiser" leaving the construction area. What possible link can there be between diamonds and energy? Rhyme and Sachs have an enormous investigation on their hands as they continue to try to find Vimal. Unfortunately, the killer is on Vimal's trail as well.

I found this novel to be a difficult one to follow. There were too many storylines happening at the same time and connections seemed tenuous at best. I do like a story with twists and turns but this one felt like being in a whirlpool.
