Hi Lianne, as Elyse said, it's the whole month. All my readathons are now a month long. Since Goodreads got rid of Events, I can no longer invite people who are solely on here.
I hope you are joining us.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 565 comments As of today I have finished one book and started an additional one while continuing the rest. lol.
I finished Lore by Alexandra Bracken today and I hope to also finish She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1) by Shelley Parker-Chan today.
Made significant progress in one of my buddy reads Dreadnought (Nemesis #1) by April Daniels and hardly any progress in the other 2 Under Lock & Skeleton Key (Secret Staircase Mystery, #1) by Gigi Pandian Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta .
I also started listening to You Truly Assumed by Laila Sabreen yesterday. It publishes on Tuesday.

I finished Lore today and it was alright. I gave it 3 stars. It could've been a lot better. But I'm also not a huge fan of sticking mythology in contemporary times. I prefer my mythology retellings to be in the times they were originally set. And it seems the MC is only 17?? But not in school, no graduation, no mention of caretakers, had a passport and was in France?!, off the grid, but all flashbacks of "seven years before" it was stated that she was ten years old. It didn't make sense.

Hmmm...I may rethink that one then. Yeah, I prefer the same with mythological fiction. Thanks for the summary. :)

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments I tried to enter but imagine I missed the charity giveaway... In any case, reading slowed to a crawl for me at the end of last year, but I've started 2022 off with a bang. So far this month:

Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix The Mapping of Love and Death (Maisie Dobbs, #7) by Jacqueline Winspear Fallen (Alex Verus, #10) by Benedict Jacka One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich The Beekeeper's Apprentice (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, #1) by Laurie R. King

Sabriel was very imaginative but a bit of a prosaic plot. Maisie Dobbs is always a good outing, and while this one wasn't especially exciting, Winspear does a wonderful job crafting characters and place. Fallen continues the truly magnificent Verus urban fantasy series, which I highly recommend, though the first book is definitely among the weaker ones. One for the Money was a lamentable mess of a book, though I imagine it would have felt a lot less sexist and racist to its readers at the time it was written. And The Beekeeper's Apprentice is a wonderful stab at literary Sherlock Holmes fanfic with an eye toward modernizing the character.

Whew! Plenty more reading ahead, keep the pages turning everyone!

I loved being able to listen while I worked. I try to now, but since I'm home I feel like it's harder to focus. (As opposed to when I was in a room full of people, go figure.)

It's the same for me, except I used to listen in the car and now I rarely drive. I work from home and I'm not carting kids around any longer. I seem to have a hard time focusing when I'm at home listening. So weird!

message 44: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments I've had a decent month to date. Since my last post, I've read:

The Con Man (87th Precinct, #4) by Ed McBain The Last Wish (The Witcher, #0.5) by Andrzej Sapkowski Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney These Ghosts Are Family by Maisy Card Dead Beat (The Dresden Files, #7) by Jim Butcher All That Remains (Kay Scarpetta, #3) by Patricia Cornwell Bedelia by Vera Caspary Forged (Alex Verus, #11) by Benedict Jacka The Crown's Game (The Crown's Game, #1) by Evelyn Skye

Of these, These Ghosts Are Family was definitely the most thought-provoking and richest book, though a bit uneven as far as enjoyment. Dead Beat was one of the most entertaining Dresden Files books I've read. And Rock Paper Scissors was wonderfully tense, though it fell off quite a bit at the end. The Crown's Game wasn't a good book, but otherwise, it's been a decent bunch of books.

That probably does it for me for the month, though I may try to squeeze in one more title. 15 books and about 6000 pages... I hope everyone's had fun with their reading. With everything that's going on in the world, the ability to escape into a book is an evergreen joy.
