You don't have to use this, completely up to you.

Add in all the info you can and when you read a book, just let us know in this thread it is read, but you don't need to include any detail as it is in the sheet.
If you don't want to use the tracking sheet
Then when you finish a book, add into THIS thread the book, date read, and then all the letters it may work for and why.

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Welcome everyone!

This is our 8th year of UNO and if you haven't played before, then the best way I can sum it up is that this is a challenge where you can mostly read what you like, but have more fun by getting to know other players and getting great book recommendations.

Our theme this year is famous literary places. Wuthering Heights I know can polarise people, but I have read it probably over 20 times, seen it adapted into TV, Movies and Plays and it remains one of my all time favourites. How about you?

I have sent you all friend requests and will PM you soon with the link to this thread so hopefully we will see you all soon.

I'll set up the tracking spreadsheet in the next few hours and post here also.

As an intro, I live in Sydney, Aus with my husband and 2 boys and run a HR consulting business . I read almost everything except Horror, and I'm not a massive Romance reader.

I look forward to playing with you all!

P.S Don't forget to create your UNO shelf if you haven't already

=====

Important

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Tuesday 1 Feb, 2021 at 9am UTC (Countdown is here: https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...
Main cities, FYI:

Tuesday 1 February 2022
San Francisco 1am
London 9am
New York 4am
Mumbai 2.30pm
Tokyo 6pm
Sydney 8pm

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour. You can ask us in this thread for our opinion, or use this colour tool: https://labs.tineye.com/color/ to get an idea. If in doubt, ask me or a co-captain as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion. It is NOT required to use tineye

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Brittany | 529 comments Hey everyone! This is my favorite challenge been doing it for years and always look forward to it. I am in Tampa, Fl. I love to read historicals, paranormal and sci-fi and some steamy reads.

message 12: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (ajareads) | 127 comments I am so excited to be a part of this team. I am so reading for this challenge to start, and I am so motivated to read <3.

My name is Andrea. I live in Florida right now, but I want to move to either the UK, New Zealand, or maybe somewhere in Europe. I have an embroidery/ t-shirt business and love to crochet.

I hope we can have lots of fun :D I haven't read Wuthering Heights but I have 5 different copies of it, so maybe I should lol

message 13: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments Hi everyone!! My name is Ilsen and I’m excited to be part of this team! I’m from Miami, Florida (a lot of people are from Florida on this team, wow) and I usually read a lot of fantasy and contemporary usually from the YA age group but I like to try to diversify my reading.

Being on this team is kinda funny because I recently read Wuthering Heights for my last class. I wasn’t the biggest fan but I enjoyed analyzing it. I also watched one of the adaptations as well for class and I’ll be interested to see what everyone’s thoughts are.

I’m going to see if I can fit any of the colored cards but if not, I’m glad to be on the team. I hope once everyone is here, we can figure out how we would like to run UNO when it comes to the spreadsheet because all captains do things differently! I’m so excited for UNO to start!

message 14: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jan 16, 2022 02:00PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Hi everyone,

Lots of familiar faces in our team and a few new ones to get to know which is lovely. This is my 7th UNO challenge, it's such fun. I'm from Sydney, Australia and we also have a farming property in southern NSW. I'm a Mum to 3 and Nanna to 5 with another one on the way in April which is exciting. Other than my family my passions are reading and travelling which I'm hoping to resume towards the end of this year with a cruise through the Suez Canal and down the Red Sea.

So thrilled we are Team Wuthering Heights. I'm with Karen, my favourite book since I read it when I was 14 many moons ago, and in 2017 I had the privilege of visiting the Bronte Parsonage and seeing the table where they wrote their books and poems!! I have seen just about all the movies and series, and thinking the original movie with Lawrence Olivier and Merle Oberon is probably the best. And who doesn't love Kate Bush and her red dress, singing, "Heathcliff, It's me, Cathy I've come home..." 💕

message 15: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments Howdy!

Hi everyone, I'm Sammy, and I'm a bookaholic. It's been approximately 3 minutes since I last read a page ;)

This is my first time playing Uno, but have done many other challenges.

I'm afraid I'm on the other side of the spectrum where our title book is concerned... I loved it as a teen, but when I re-read it about a year ago, I found myself thoroughly disliking Heathcliff, and didn't like Cathy all that much more.
It is however beautifully written, as I find so many Victorian novels are, which does help to off-set the fact I find Heathcliff a horrid bully, lol.

If there is one thing I seem to enjoy even more than reading books, it's planning what books to read! I already looked at the sheet earlier, and found that I have books to cover every colour card, plus spares to cover wild draw 4s!

I'm not a huge fan of YA or romance, but will generally read a bit of everything.

message 16: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments On an additional note, I live only a few miles from Haworth!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Sammy, great to playing on a team with you again.

I re-read Wuthering Heights a few years ago after I visited the Parsonage and appreciated it a different light from when I was younger when it was all about the ill fated romance and the brooding hotness of Heathcliff. The language is so beautiful. And it's not really a love story at all, but how circumstances mold people and how two people who supposedly love each other really bring out the absolute worst in each other.

Wow, Sammy, My best friend who I travelled there with, her maiden name is Keighley. Her Dad's family originally came from there about 7 generations ago. I loved the area although I went in September it's probably pretty brutal in winter.

Colour covers - I've got a Blue 1 or 3 A Lady's Formula for Love (The Secret Scientists of London, #1) by Elizabeth Everett and Green 1. Deal Breaker (Myron Bolitar, #1) by Harlan Coben I can do more but I'll try not to get over excited and hog too many, LOL.

Sally906 | 611 comments G’day All

Nice to be on this team - and many of you I have been on teams with before - a couple of you are new to me so expect a friend request pretty soon 😀👍

So, about me, I’m a retired Aussie who lives in Queensland. I am mum to two and Nanna to 3. I thought when I retired I would have more time to read - but I am so busy I am actually reading less! I am an eclectic reader and will read most Genre, although my comfort books are paranormal romances and cosy mysteries.

Hmm Wuthering Heights? Not a favourite of mine, but I loved Kate Bush’s song. Kate and I shared a boarding school dormitory back in the late 60s - she was 2 years younger than me (I was 11) and she used to be constantly singing even then. In fact our Dorm Captain was always telling her to shut up as her voice was horrible and she’d never make it as a singer. LOL - how wrong was she 😀

Hey Lisa, been a while!

I've been all over the UK, including living in the north-east of Scotland, and the weather in Yorkshire is the most consistently terrible I've ever experienced. and hubby wonders why I'm desperate to leave! lol. To an Aussie, I'll wager our winters are no fun at all. Cold, wet and miserable!

I'd also not want to try to climb the main street in Haworth when it's icy!!

The Suez Canal!!!? Wow.

Apparently I did that with my parents when I was about 8 but don’t have any memories of it. Would love to do it now I’m older.

I understand what you mean about Heathcliff. It is actually one of the things I love about the book... every time I read it I go back and forth with my feelings for Heathcliff. Sometimes I hate him. Sometimes I feel sorry for him. Sometimes I even begrudgingly respect him :o

I actually think Catherine was worse. One part of me understands she was a woman of a certain class in a certain time and had to marry for her advantage. Yes she was headstrong, emotional and over dramatic but so very cruel at times.

I would say green. And we usually go with the colour that it seems more like on the physical copy if you have one ;)

Stacey | 610 comments Hi all! Look forward to reading with you! This is my third or fourth year playing and my second as co-captain. I'm in the US, currently in Ohio (midwest) but still think of myself as an east coast girl. I have one teen, a husband, dog, and a crazy job which sometimes interferes with reading (at least reading as much as I might like).

I read Wuthering Heights as a teen. I think it was one summer when I read like crazy any romance or classic I could find. I may have to reread this one as I honestly don't remember much. It didn't stick with me the way some of the others did.

Oh me too. Tolstoy's would be amazing, although I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Anna Karenina. Love the BBC adaption, the book not so much. The other places I've visited which I loved are Louisa May Alcott's house and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top. Museums now, all set up how they lived in them. And my biggest miss was trying to go to PEI to see the Anne of Green Gables house. The weather was so bad the cruise ship I was on had to sail right past.. with me crying ( and puking) in the cabin. But it's still on the list someday.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments I team!!

Karen we haven't been in a team in what? 8 years? More? Lol

Anyway, please don't kick me out of the team, but Wuthering Heights it's pretty much the reason I started hating classics.

Once it started being mentioned on twilight I considered reading it again, because it couldn't be the same book but then... It was the book that made me hate classics.

Who knows, maybe I end up reading it.

Anyway, I have some blankets, and crackers and bottles water and some flashlights to ensure we can read. Plus a stash of yarn to knit/crochet more warm stuff if needed be.

message 43: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments I'm also pretty sure I have a NR Walker that we can use for red. I'll confirm tomorrow, since I'm all snuggled in bed and almost asleep, but I remember grabbing it on KU, and then realized it could be used for uno.

I forgot to tell, I'm from near Lisbon, Portugal, and our climate is awesome. Lol. Even if it's a bit colder than what I prefer at the moment

I am also one of those readers who have a great respect for Emily Brontë, but judge Heathcliff to be a byronic-bulls**t-hero. :)

But looking at the bright side, Sammy, I guess you can always post some pics of HC-actors and hold the competition on who is the hottest/horridest of the. ;)
