Hey team!

I'm going to try and pick a book with the most points i can find each round off my TBR pile. I'm thinking title, Goodreads Shelf, and author are the three easiest categories with lots of options. We shall see. :)

message 4: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Murphy (tiffers919) | 989 comments That sounds like a great strategy. I have a few books ready to start.

There is no shelf option. That is one of the categories, but it hasn't been called yet.

Found a couple book options...not sure which I'll read yet.

Secret Refuge (Wings of Danger #2) by Dana Mentink "On the rooftop below, the colony of Quaker parrots bustled about, preening and tending to their tangle of nests. Kindle Location #1932 (worth 1 point)

The Sea Before Us (Sunrise at Normandy, #1) by Sarah Sundin "He scooped the pup into his arms and stood." Page 62 (worth 1 point)

Line by Line (Love along the Wires, #1) by Jennifer Delamere "Emma was just tossing a morsel of bread to a pigeon when she caught sight of Alice." Page 199 (worth 1 point)

The Wedding Machine by Beth Webb Hart
"Kitty B. readjusted herself on the lid of her rose-colored toilet in her pink tiled bathroom as she stroked Peaches, her mangy apricot poodle, who was licking her hands as she wrung them." - Page 3 (worth 2 points)

Tiffany Murphy (tiffers919) | 989 comments Dumb question: does it help if author’s name starts with p too? Like “This Present Darkness by Frank R Peretti?

OO, so if an animal has a P name and a P category we can count both?

message 16: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new)

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
Tiffany, it doesn't help if the author's name starts with P. This round only matter about the animal.

Hannah,
Yes, as long as it is mentioned somehow together.
ie. Zoey the Zebra:
her zebra, named Zoey;
it was Zoey, the old zebra.

Yes. :)

Are we to include each mention of a " p " animal or will it only count once?

Rancher Daddy by Lois Richer

“The whole town was in on getting that little pinto pony to the ranch and hiding it so she wouldn't find it till morning.” page 110

Second Chance Rancher (Bluebonnet Springs, #1) by Brenda Minton

"He pulled Lucy to the edge of the sidewalk as the brown, potbellied pig ambled past, snuffling a bit at their legs before continuing on his journey"

Hill Country Redemption (Hill Country Cowboys #1) by Shannon Taylor Vannatter
The white-and-brown splotched pinto pony had entertained..." Chapter 1

Notice

If you have a team member that didn't check in or finish a book for a round, someone else on the team may post an extra book to fill in for them.

Preference is for each member to read their own (1) book, but life happens and sometimes someone can't read as expected.

message 27: by Monica S. (new)

Monica S. White | 45 comments So, I did not get notified yesterday regarding what letter this first round is based on. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Were we supposed to get Messaged, or are we supposed to click on the thread for our team’s chat?

I’m so confused. This the 3rd consecutive contest that I’ve missed out on vital info. to get started. Melanie, PLEASE help! Thank you!!! 🤗

message 28: by Monica S. (new)

Monica S. White | 45 comments OK, right as I posted my last comment a moment ago, I saw the comment/post with the info I need: it’s down here at the BOTTOM of the thread, not pinned (if it can be) at the TOP, like I expected. 🤣
Thanks again! 🤗

message 29: by Monica S. (new)

Monica S. White | 45 comments Melanie, would this book: “When We Were Very Young” by: A. A. Milne (P= Piglet) work for my selection for this round? It has 102 pages. If not, I will keep looking, but I live in FL panhandle, where schools are closed today due to being under a winter advisory with potentially icy roads, so I doubt the library I open, either. (I’ll call in a couple hours, when it should open, to check.)

I'm so sorry, but it has to be at least 150 pages. :(

Regarding notification, I first post on the Called Category and Letter thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you want to get notifications for that thread, just scroll to the bottom and click "Notify me when people comment" (located right above the chat box).

I hope that helps and I'm sorry tor the difficulty of this round. :/

message 31: by Monica S. (new)

Monica S. White | 45 comments Melanie, I thought that the rules for this contest head said, “at least 100 pages.” So, OK, I guess it’s actually 150. 👌

I will check the link for the other thread you just shared, but I’m checking this thread for the “Notify me when someone comments” option for this the thread, where you said to look for it, & I can't find it here. 🤷🏽‍♀️

message 32: by Monica S. (new)

Monica S. White | 45 comments OK, for this thread, I clicked on the “Thread Settings” tab down here at the bottom where we can add new comments, & there are a couple of options available similar to the one you recommended. Thanks! 🤗

Secondary Female Character

Some books I've found.

Beyond All Dreams by Elizabeth Camden
What happened to Sarah Starling was a warning to every woman who worked in the Capitol." Page 62

Safe by the Marshal's Side (Witness Protection #1) by Shirlee McCoy
"A black sedan pulled into the space beside them, and Serena Summers got out." Page 21
(I've already read this one, but just wanted to share a find)

Tiffany wrote: "Is there a way for our book to count as more than one point?"

Yes, if the secondary female character's first and last name start with S, that's two points. First and middle name, that's two points. Middle and last name, that's two points. First, middle, and last name, that's three points.

Examples:

Sarah Elizabeth Smith (2 points - first and last name)
Sarah Sandra Smith (3 points - first, middle, and last name)
Nicknames don't count for extra, so Sarah "Sally" Smith would only be 2 points
Jobs/Titles also don't count towards points, so Secret Service Agent Sarah Smith would only be 2 points

Tiffany Murphy (tiffers919) | 989 comments How do we know which books have a character that qualifies?

message 49: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new)

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
I usually search my Kindle books for female S names to see if there are any secondary characters, but you can also go to either Amazon (click the book's cover to search inside the book) or go to books.google.com and see if you can search inside a particular book. Hope that's helpful. On the app right now, so difficult to link/type in depth. Just make sure that the character you're using isn't mentioned in the blurb/description of the book. :)

message 50: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Melanie, what if a “best friend” or “daughter” is mentioned by name on the back cover blurb? They still are a secondary character, as they aren’t the lead. Or am I wrong on that?
