Well, it really is a “hell of a book”. 2021 National Book Award for Fiction. Great writing. Unique, fresh, and imaginative approach to serious themes. The book is written in a loose, fluid style that breaks down the fourth wall, alternating between a newly published black writer on a book tour and 10-year old boy, both of whom come from the same NC rural town. In addition to race, identify and tragedy, themes include survival and loss, forgetting and feeling, and being watched but not seen alongside the desire to be invisible. Recommended read.
