I recommend Gustav Hasford's book series and the movie based on the first of the books, "Full Metal Jacket" (1987)

Lisa (lisa-ny) | 3 comments I enjoyed reading and highly recommend Gustav Hasford's books "The Short-Timers" (1979) and "The Phantom Blooper: A Novel of Vietnam" (1990). Hasford intended to publish the books as part of a "Vietnam Trilogy" but died before publishing the final book. However, director Stanley Kubrik adapted "The Short-Timers" as the feature film, "Full Metal Jacket" (1987).

As noted in Wikipedia: Gustav_Hasford#Books (linked here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_...), "The screenplay by Hasford, Kubrick, and screenwriter Michael Herr was nominated for an Academy Award. Hasford's actual contributions were a subject of dispute among the three, and ultimately Hasford chose not to attend the Oscar ceremonies."

All of Hasford's books are now out of print. I was fortunate to read them when they were freely available at GustavHasford.com, but that website is now defunct. Nonetheless, the books can be borrowed from the Open Library (at https://openlibrary.org/authors/OL770...) or read at archived pages of gustavhasford.com, such as those linked at Wikipedia: Gustav_Hasford.
