If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura is a novel set in contemporary Japan, yet imbued with fantastic elements created to make us pose the big questions we usually avoid asking ourselves sincerely.

The movie touched me deeply. I hope the book will also impress me. I'd like to hear your opinions! Freely share your thoughts and impressions below :)

My favorite quotes from the book:

Cats and humans have been partners for over ten thousand years. And what you realize when you've lived with a cat for a long time is that we may think we own them, but that's not the way it is. They simply allow us the pleasure of their company.

I scooped the cat up and snuggled him against my chest for comfort. He was warm and soft, a smooth fluffy ball of fur in my arms. I'd cuddled up with the little guy countless times over the years without thinking much about it, but now, for the first time ever, it occurred to me that maybe this little act of comfort was what life was all about.

I liked the book. Even though the style was a bit strange (I wasn't sure if the author himself expressed like that in Japanese or the translation was a bit childish), the book made me think. A lot. I cried a bit too. Some may say it was too sentimental, but maybe that's what we need sometimes; something that will pull at our strings harder than we like.
