SCPL Teens discussion

The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a mysterious millionaire named Jay Gatsby told through the eyes of Nick Carraway. The story is set in the roaring 20's which affects the characters motives and perceptions throughout the whole book. There is a division between old and new rich and an overarching theme of obsession.

I enjoyed how the book commentated on the ideal 'American Dream'. Though this book was written in the 20's, its messages are still applicable to todays life. Is the American Dream an illusion? What exactly defines the American Dream? Fitzgerald's writing style helps push the book forward as if we as a reader are chasing the American Dream alongside the characters. I enjoyed Fitzgerald's use of color imagery and diction.

The Great Gatsby is a must read tragic classic. I rate the book a 5/5.
