Sign up to the challenge where it is shown at the top of the discussions on the Group Home Page.
If you don't see the latest active challenge click the link Challenges.

You will be asked which shelf the books to read are on. If you say horse and you do not have a horse bookshelf, Goodreads will put one in to your personal list of shelves.
When you complete a read you have placed on that shelf Goodreads sees the progress.

Now the challenge registers that you have read some of the books.

You might decide to name it challenge shelf so it would be used for challenges in any other Group too.
Tell us your titles in this thread.

For starters.

I've been asked a great question, do horses competing in the Olympics qualify towards our challenge. They certainly do!

Jubilee: The First Therapy Horse and an Olympic Dream

Linda Shantz | 25 comments I'm currently reading a nonfiction horse racing book, Run With A Mighty Heart.

Run With a Mighty Heart How A Racehorse with One Eye Helped a Family Find Meaning in Life and Loss by Jennifer Morrison

I have some catching up to do with other nonfiction horse racing titles I have on my list! I prefer to read fiction, so they often get set aside in favour of a novel!

Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown by Jennifer S. Kelly

Out of the Clouds The Unlikely Horseman and the Unwanted Colt Who Conquered the Sport of Kings by Linda Carroll

The Legacy of Windfields Farm Turquoise and Gold, Bred in the Purple by Colin Nolte

I know what you mean, Linda, the fiction is easier to pick up; but I enjoy the non fiction ones so much while reading them. I haven't seen the books you're showing, so let us know how you find them and if I should put them on the Group Bookshelf.

Linda Shantz | 25 comments I just finished the Mighty Heart book. It was a very light, fast read, which made it super easy to consume! Definitely recommend. I may have a slight bias toward it because Mighty Heart won the Queen's Plate a few weeks after I published Good Things Come, and his victory had the same vibe!

The other non-fiction books I posted above are a little more involved so will take more time!

In Praise of Famous Horses: An A-Z of the Most Celebrated in History and Culture, Myth and Sport
In Praise of Famous Horses An A-Z of the Most Celebrated in History and Culture, Myth and Sport by Sean Magee

Currently reading this one and so many racehorses are featured that I'm counting it for the challenge.

Also I have this one stored up and might get to it.

Rough Magic: Riding the World's Loneliest Horse Race
Rough Magic Riding the World's Loneliest Horse Race by Lara Prior-Palmer

This is a tale of a recently revived long distance horse race across Mongolia.

Ann (annhunter) | 14 comments This is more a recommendations post for anyone who wants to participate but not sure what to read.

I'd like to recommend Titans by Victoria Scott. The opening line gives me chills.
Titans by Victoria Scott

And Seabiscuit: An American Legendby Laura Hillenbrand
Seabiscuit An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand

I also love Man O'War by Walter Farley
Man O'War by Walter Farley

After you read that, please keep the North Oak series in mind. The heir apparent of Joanna Campbell's beloved Thoroughbred Series (WHICH YOU SHOULD ALSO READ!).

Born to Run (North Oak, #1) by Ann Hunter
Yearling (North Oak #2) by Ann Hunter
Morning Glory (North Oak, #3) by Ann Hunter

I'm preparing to write book 8, 9, and 10 this summer!

The end of April is cantering towards us, so how is anyone doing with the challenge?
I'm not up to my aim yet.
And it's fine to start now and commit to reading one book!

Tudor Robins | 7 comments I definitely have catching up on Natalie Keller Reinert's eventing books on my list! I see someone early on recommended Ambition, which is the first book, and which I loved when I first read it!

On a separate topic, I could use everybody's help for a list I'm compiling - in your opinion, what's a great horse book that non-horsey readers can also love?

I've nearly finished Sir Barton - just reading the back matter now (I'm that person who reads every word, right down to the acknowledgements!). I also discovered Marguerite Henry's King of the Wind on audio so I listened to it last week. Her books certainly stand the test of time. It was a nice tie-in to the Sir Barton book because it begins with the match race between him and Man o' War.

King of the Wind The Story of the Godolphin Arabian by Marguerite Henry

I just purchased this one after reading Dawn LeFevre's interview with the author.

Casual Lies-A Triple Crown Adventure by Shelley Lee Riley

Hi Tudor! Well, Black Beauty is always a good bet. This book explains that working people had tough working conditions, just as much as the horses.

Here is a fun YA book which should not take too long to read.

The Racehorse Who Wouldn't Gallop
The Racehorse Who Wouldn't Gallop by Clare Balding

Or you could go for the classic
National Velvet
National Velvet by Enid Bagnold

and its sequel
International Velvet
International Velvet by Bryan Forbes
which is about three-day eventing.

If you want a suspense story - seems like older teens and adults - this one is free for download during May. A prequel novella for a crime series.
