Tr1sha | 336 comments During March, the (optional) challenge is to read a classic book or short story in which at least one animal is an important feature. The book may be fiction or non-fiction & the animal may be real, a toy or an imaginary creature.

Examples include Travels with Charley: In Search of America, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Black Beauty, White Fang. Some members may like to read a short children’s book with a child or grandchild, perhaps The Velveteen Rabbit or one of the many stories by Beatrix Potter.

Tr1sha | 336 comments This is looking great! Lots of different ideas, so perhaps some of us will find more book recommendations from this challenge.

message 15: by J (new)

J | 18 comments I'm about through with Moby Dick, but one doesn't merely read Moby Dick. I've studied taxonomy, evolution, and cetacean anatomy to better understand it. Since beginning it my interest has grown, and I've recently adopted a humpback whale named Salt through the WDC. In other words, it's a book that can greatly affect its reader.

message 16: by Karin (last edited Mar 20, 2022 11:32AM) (new)

Karin I'll sign up but have no idea at this moment in time if I have something I'll be reading that will count or not. However, since it doesn't have to be the title I will probably have at least one. In February I read a book featuring twins, but it wasn't mentioned in the title, so c'est la vie.

As Mad as a March Hare!
March Challenge 2022

1/3/22 - 31/3/22
0/?

1 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien rife with eagles, wolves, a man/bear and, of course, Smaug the Dragon. Finished on March 7
2 Vinyl Cafe Unplugged a FIVE STAR book, features more than one animal, including Arthur the dog--one section stars animals (not from their POV), but they are included in others. Mostly Arthur.
3...

The Stray Lamb by Thorne Smith
The Stray Lamb by Thorne Smith

The main character gets transformed into different types of animals unexpectedly, and just as unexpectedly back into human form.

message 25: by Karin (new)

Karin I'm going to count The Hobbit when I'm done. So many important animals in this one!

I finished my first book, Island by huxley.

Cosmic Arcata | 90 comments I am wondering if The Woman in the Dunes might qualify for this challenge? It features insects as a metaphor heavily. Not one type of insect.

Jazzy, as always you are ahead of me - you’ve finished your first book while I’m still dithering about what to read!

Actually I was drawn to the book because of the metaphor of the insects!

That’s a good choice! I was considering reading it again but have found other books that are suitable too & won’t have time to read them all.

I might try to read White Fang this month too.

Not necessarily :)! Many authors invent characters very different from themselves--I think there is quite a range.

Lynn (lynnsreads) | 164 comments Jazzy wrote: "I would have loved to see the pictures!"

I took your comment seriously, but do not think I can post any of the artwork here. The students put names on the front, there are privacy issues...yadda yadda. It was a fun activity. I was trying to get across the point that illustration should reinforce and add additional information to a text. Good illustrations are more than simply decorative.

I am sure that people who are more tech saavy than I am would know how to blur parts of pics and all....

I suppose that opinions vary--but I can and have seen a few writing a character who is the antithesis of themselves, even if they aren't the protagonist. Not commonly, though, because few people have that kind of personal awareness, etc.

Vit Babenco | 116 comments Books are read:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Herman Melville - Moby-Dick or, the Whale
The whale and the captain – both crazy.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 D.H. Lawrence - Three Novellas: The Ladybird, The Fox, The Captain’s Doll
Ladybird is cute and fox is sly.
