T ✩ Handmaiden Of Amidala (tarria) | 113 comments Eh it was a quick read. It was entertaining - I'd describe it as some sort of book sugar rush. Not much substance though. Also I hated Celaena as a character. Not once does she behave like an actual criminal. I'd hate to see what the other assassins in the country are like if she's supposedly the best one.

iamaunicornwithyellowfeet (bookobsessedblob) | 567 comments NOTE:

We received a comment about this book being chosen as BOTM, regarding the rumours that Sarah J Maas is a Zionist. Of course, we don't support Zionism, however we wanted to address this.

There is no confirmation that SJM is a Zionist, although there is some evidence that she may be. All that aside, you can still read and enjoy a book without supporting the author, for example by borrowing it from a library or reading an ebook. Reading the BOTM isn't compulsory, so anyone who doesn't want feel comfortable reading it doesn't need to.

T ✩ Handmaiden Of Amidala (tarria) | 113 comments I did hear about that. I don't like the author's take on diversity (every POC gets killed off to further the white main characters storyline and she describes her obviously white characters as 'tan' so she can tick the diversity checklist) and it's suspicious she hasn't done anything to rebuke the rumours but at the same time we haven't had enough proof that's she's an actual Zionist. Her grandparents may have been but that isn't on her.

Anyway I borrow books from the library instead of buying actual copies so it doesn't really matter... yet.

Saraf Tarisha | 72 comments I would like to add something with Zara's - To enjoy a book we don't need to support the writer - For example many of us love Harry Potter books and for many people it was there childhood including mine. But we never support the writer. The person isn't very great but she created a great stuff. And we are loving and supporting that stuff not her.

I usually separate the author from his/her work. I don't obviously support SJM. But similarly like JKR's books by reading SJM's book you won't be supporting Zionism and the author herself. You will just enjoy a piece of literary work.

As Zara said it isn't compulsory to read it, so don't read it if you feel uncomfortable bcz of the author's views. You can still enjoy our other BOTM which is Scythe.

Yes just cuz u've read a book where the author is bad doesn't mean u can't read the book. When u say u enjoy the book u say u like the book not the author

Zahraa | 23 comments I loved this book when I first read it but when I reread it I noticed how Celaena didn’t have much depth to her. There wasn’t much character development in the first book. The later books, however, get better

Saffy 🍉 (saffy101) I have currently gotten through one half of the book, and so far... it's kind of a disappointment. I mean, this book is really popular, so my expectations were pretty high (Which by now, I should know not to do). I was expecting something more interesting, more action-packed, and instead I got some half-witted heroine, Celeana, describing her appearance at every page- who is also top-notch assassin (Though I would never have guessed that, if she didn't constantly remind us that All. The. Time.)

T ✩ Handmaiden Of Amidala (tarria) | 113 comments Exactly I hate Celaena as a protagonist so much. She's just so vain and unlikeable and everyone loves her because... plot. I hate the term Mary Sue but she is the VERY DEFINITION of one. Also only recently I found out this is supposed to be a CINDERELLA retelling. I wish I'd known that before I read it.
("Adarlan's Greatest Assassin" - if anyone's reading a digital copy I dare you to search how often these words come up. It's laughable).

Saraf Tarisha | 72 comments In the 1st book she isn't exactly a badass assassin but the next books are better than this.

T ✩ Handmaiden Of Amidala (tarria) | 113 comments I actually started to like her in Crown of Midnight then in Heir of Fire she became insufferable again.
