I want to welcome you to March's book Joyland! We are continuing with the "killing two birds, with one stone" idea and following Lala's Buzzwordathon theme for the month of March. Her theme this time around was 'LOCATION' Joyland is an amusement park so it fits the theme. YAY! This is another Hard Case Crime edition and the second story King wrote for this publishing company. The first book being The Colorado Kid. The first time I read The Colorado Kid, I listened to it on audio. If you haven't listened to a King book on audio, you really should. I'm pretty sure every King book I have listened to starts off with an introduction by King. He talks about how he got the idea for the book, where he was in his life and so forth. I think I'm remembering correctly and maybe Ashley can help me on this, King was contacted by the men who created Hard Case Crime. They wanted to bring back the old 80's crime noir books. They asked King if he would write a foreword for one of their books I believe, and King was so excited, he said he'd write a whole story.
Joyland was published in 2013. It is about a young man named Devin Jones who takes a summer job at a local amusement park called Joyland. While Devin works at Joyland he learns of a murder that happened on the amusement park's only "scary ride" - Horror House. Devin gets caught up in trying to figure out the murderer and we as the readers get carried along with him.
This was my first Hard Crime read and I found it to be a very unlike King book. What I mean by that is, if you have read a lot of King, there is a certain style that you get used to. LOOOONG drawn out character development. (I like this about King) You also get daily life: meals and details you didn't think you needed, but were happy to have. (Again something I find fun to read about.) This book is a like a cozy mystery that gets to the point.
In 2018 Freeform the tv network was in talks of creating a mini-series for this book. Nothing has been posted since November of 2018. Hopefully something comes up soon. I love watching King adaptations. Here's a link to a recent list of what may be coming up soon in adaptations. https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/stephen-...
Hope you all enjoy this book if you haven't read it already. Please let me know what you think below.
