This thread is open to any and all discussion around Poetry. If you'd like to comment about "An American Sunrise," please make sure to include the title in your comment.
Poetry is a form of literature that changes and deepens each time you read it. Read a few poems and you might catch the literal or superficial meaning. Then, try it again a little later and discover layers underneath. Poetry, as a medium, dates back to early civilization, along with oral storytelling. Over time, poetry remained a constant form of expression and many poets and poems are known centuries after their publication. Some famous poets include William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, W. B. Yeats, Robert Frost, and Langston Hughes.
"An American Sunrise" is the latest collection from Joy Harjo, the current US Poet Laureate and the first Native American to hold the position. Her poems explore and lift the indigenous nations of the US. Harjo has won numerous prizes and awards for her works over the years.
Which poetry titles are you reading this month? Please include the title, author, and publication date. You can review the work or just talk about it. Here are some questions to get started.
1. Why did you select and read this book? 2. Would you recommend this book to others? 3. What is it about poetry that attracts readers? And, why do you think poetry has endured for such a long time?
