Cloris Leachman never failed to make me laugh. Her comedic timing was priceless. Let’s celebrate and remember her this month.

Tribute to Cloris Leachman
Duration: One month from the start date.

Choose as many tasks as you wish and tasks can be used more than once
Participation Badge is awarded for this challenge

Tasks:

1. Born on April 30, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, Cloris Leachman was named after her mother. Her father, Berkeley Claiborne “Buck” Leachman, worked at Leachman Lumber Company, which was family owned. In her teens, Cloris performed in weekend plays at Drake University. After high school, she attended Northwestern University School of Education, where she joined the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and shared classes with comic actors Paul Lynde and Charlotte Rae. Cloris had two sisters; Claiborne Cary (named for their father) also became an actress and singer, but Mary did not work in show business.

Read a book that features sisters
OR in which a character works with a family member
OR whose title begins with a letter in CLORIS LEACHMAN (ignore articles).

2. Cloris competed as Miss Chicago in the Miss America pageant in 1946. By placing in the top 16 contestants, she earned a scholarship that allowed her to study acting under renowned director Elia Kazan at the Actors Studio in New York City. Cloris then began her professional acting career on the stage. She was invited by Katharine Hepburn to co-star in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, which caused her to pull out of a play just before it reached Broadway. Other early-career highlights for Leachman were appearances in many 1950s live television broadcasts, a brief stint in Lassie, and as an extra in her feature-film debut: Carnegie Hall. Though she had a couple of small roles in feature films during these years, the early stages of her career continued to focus on television-show roles.

Read a book in which a leading character hops from job to job for a while (must be at least three different jobs; tell what they are)
OR in which a person is hand-picked for something (explain)
OR a book set in a large city (such as Chicago or New York City).

3. While filming The Last Picture Show Cloris Leachman did such a spectacular job in her supporting role that director Peter Bogdanovich predicted she would win the Oscar. Her win for Best Supporting Actress was only the first of many accolades Cloris would earn in her career. She won eight Primetime Emmy Awards, which tied her with Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most awarded performer in Emmy history, and Cloris stood alone as the most nominated with 22 nominations. In addition to these, she won other accolades, some of which were a British Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Daytime Emmy Award.

Read a book that takes place in both the United States AND England
OR in which a character brags about another character (share sentence and location)
OR by an author who has won at least two different awards (share which awards).

4. Cloris Leachman’s Golden Globe was earned for her role in the beloved situation comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show. This sitcom provided one of her most memorable characters, Phyllis Lindstrom, who was a neighbor and snobbish friend to Mary. The arrogant, controlling Phyllis often swapped insults with another character named Rhoda. Both Rhoda and Phyllis were given spinoff shows named after their characters, Rhoda and Phyllis respectively.

Read a book with a character who could be called snobbish, arrogant, or controlling (which character?)
OR that has a one-word title
OR that features a group of friends.

5. Throughout her illustrious career, Cloris took on a variety of roles in TV movies and guest spots on TV shows. Some memorable ones later in her career were as Ruth in Touched by an Angel, Aunt Mooster in Angel’s spinoff series Promised Land, Ida in Malcolm in the Middle, Miss Hattie Clarence in Love Takes Wing, and Memaw in I Can Only Imagine. She even appeared as a contestant in the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars. Additionally, she provided the voice for many an animated character in a number of cartoons and animated films. With nearly 300 IMDB credits to her name, clearly her comedic timing, dry wit, and spunky personality provided plenty of laughter and endeared her to fans all around the globe.

Read a book that makes you laugh
OR that features a character that wriggles into your heart
OR by an author with over 100 titles to their name (link to the author).

6. Cloris Leachman married George Englund on April 19, 1953. They had five children: Dinah, Bryan, Morgan, George Jr., and Adam; and six grandchildren: Anabel, Portia, Skye, Arielle, Jackson, and Hallelujah. All five children worked in show business for at least a portion of their professional careers, and granddaughter Anabel became a singer, songwriter, and record producer. Cloris and George were married over 25 years before divorcing on December 29, 1978. Their son Bryan died at the age of 30 from an overdose of a prescription medication in 1986. In 2009, Cloris and George co-wrote the book Cloris: My Autobiography. George Englund died at the age of 91 in 2017, from complications from a fall.

Read Cloris: My Autobiography by Cloris Leachman and George Englund
OR in which a main character has at least five children
OR in which a character follows in his or her parent(s)’s footsteps (explain how, using spoilers if needed).

7. While Cloris Leachman had been sick with Covid-19 prior to her death, she died on January 27, 2021, of a stroke at the age of 94 in her home in Encinitas, California, with her daughter, Dinah, by her side. Cloris’s body was cremated, and her ashes now reside in her daughter’s home. Many fellow entertainers sent out social media messages of love, respect, and memories of their time spent with Cloris Leachman during their collective careers. Her manager, Juliet Green, summed up her career and legacy this way: “There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”

Read a book in which a beloved character dies (using spoiler tags, tell who)
OR that features a mother-daughter plot
OR by an author who has died (link author).

Hi, JoAnne. One of the rules here in TLC is that "[w]hen you have finished, please re-post your whole challenge as a new message." (emphasis added) The reason for this is so that the moderators and other challenge hosts don't have extra time to scroll through the full challenge, even if message numbers are given, to find finished challenges.

Please repost the finished challenge in a new comment, and I'll get things checked. Thank you so much, JoAnne!

It was added in later rather than as a new message. I thought we weren't supposed to have to scroll up to find things. I'll go scroll up to check it. Thanks for correcting me.

Never a problem. I sometimes get confused which thread I'm on. These are the only challenges that require me to repost in full when finished.

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 907 comments It was an adjustment for me too, when I first saw the repost requirement. I love it now, because it lets us all see the books each person has read. My TBR is a lot larger now because of it. :)

Cloris Leachman never failed to make me laugh. Her comedic timing was priceless. Let’s celebrate and remember her this month.

Though she had a couple of small roles in feature films during these years, the early stages of her career continued to focus on television-show roles.
