Jessi (honeybeealley) | 7 comments Please recommend me your favorite anthologies, pretty much anything except romance themed. Please include a brief description of genre/theme too. Thanks :)

Jessica, are you interested in (non-romance) anthologies for children, teens and/or adults?

Joseph DeBolt (wwwjerichocomicscom) Nine By Laumer, by Keith Laumer, came out in 1969, and though it's a product of it's time, the themes are relevant, mainly the individual vs. forcibly-conforming society, as in the stories "Cocoon" and "The Walls." I found it enjoyable.

There are multiple YA authors who contributed, some are up and coming. It's contemporary fiction, as the theme is all about the immigration experience: what it feels like in a new country, a changed person returning home, conflict two cultural identities, etc. Most of which, I think can be related on a personal level to an extent.

Hope Nation: YA Authors Share Personal Moments of Inspiration
Another collection made by YA authors, more notable ones on here. These are more essay-like, about half are kind of autobiographical as each author explains what they believe is the concept of hope & resistance in response weary and oppressive times. It was a mixed bag for me, but if you are more into writing than stories, it may be a real gem.

Sirvantes | 180 comments My favorite anthology of all time is The Golden Treasury of Poetry selected by Louis Untermeyer . It's poetry for children, in the main, but the selections have wide appeal for many different ages. I give a copy to every family I know when their first child is born, hoping to help new parents raise their children with a love of language and reading.
Honestly, though, I think your request is too broad. You need to narrow your search by age or reading level, at the very least.

John Green | 63 comments Rogues edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois is pretty wide-ranging, with a mixture of sf, fantasy, horror and psychological drama. I believe one of the stories in the book ("What Do You Do?" by Gillian Flynn) won an Edgar award and was later published as a book in its own right: The Grownup
