Page I’m on: 21
Entry: OK. I wasn’t going to start a full-on writing piece having to do with this book so early on, but I honestly cannot help myself. For the love of all things YA, this book is a literal masterpiece thus far. It is a beautiful, soft, brilliant, nearly tragic work of art that I can’t imagine myself ever wanting to forget.
We have Steffi - our brave, albeit shy, heroine who navigates her way through the first day of sixth form (the UK’s upper high school equivalent to US) feeling mostly defeated at first. And then… she meets quite possibly the sweetest, cutest YA boy of all time: Rhys!!! These two have an electrifying, yet believable dynamic built upon humor and instant fondness, though it isn’t so I’m-into-you-at-first sight that it can be called insta-love and thank the heavens for that! Everything about Sara Barnard’s writing is raw, real, and expository in nature without being boring or too wordy. My attention has held strong throughout the first twenty pages which tends to be the most difficult part of a novel for me.
One more thing - Mr. Stafford is hilariously oblivious, almost to a fault. When introducing Steffi and Rhys, he seems quite ignorant to the fact of Rhys’ disability and its impact, though I believe he ultimately means well! I can’t really hold anything against him - after all, he did bring Steffi and Rhys together in the first place. And, as I stated, he means well.
Can’t wait to see how the rest of my journey through this book goes!
Hopefully this ages well :,)
