The next optional challenge is “A is for April”. During April, read any classic book where the first word of the title begins with the letter A, ignoring the word “the” if necessary. Possible examples include Animal Farm, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Adam Bede. Of course, you could read Anna Karenina - but most of us probably won’t have time to read that! Whatever you choose, enjoy your April reading.

(If you want to read books that are not written in English, you may use the letter equivalent to A in your chosen language or use the English translation for the title of your book. For example you could read All Quiet on the Western Front in German, when its title is Im Westen nichts Neues.)

A Strayed Allegiance is a short story by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I have only read the first two Anne books so far. My mother gave me her hardback set of the books when I was a child. I still have them. I like Montgomery and have been sampling some of her short stories. Most were written before she started writing novels. I gave it 4*. The youngsters today (lol) really seem to dislike it. I thought it was a nice period piece with a touch of melodrama. The heroine absolutely does not act like a modern woman. More power to her.

An Imaginative Woman by: Thomas Hardy had all the brooding emotionalism and tragedy that I associate with something written by Thomas Hardy. What an impact this story made!!

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a classic children's book. I rotate books from the classroom shelves to a round table and have students choose from the table some days. Other days it is free choice. (8 year old children) I couldn't resist Alexander this month.

I would like to share the gr information about the book I've chosen to read this month.

Angarey: 9 Stories and a Play (1932) - Vibha S. Chauhan

Angarey was banned by the government of the United Provinces a few months after it was first published in 1932. Almost all the copies printed were seized and set on fire. The release of the book had been marked by protests and the government was convinced that it would offend the sensibilities of society. Written by four young firebrands-Sajjad Zahir, Ahmed Ali, Rashid Jahan and Mahmuduzzafar-Angarey comprises nine stories and a play. 'Heaven Assured' pokes fun at a moulvi's excessive piety, while 'Masculinity' effectively uses the interior monologue to skewer patriarchy. The stories 'A Night of Mahavatt, the Winter Rain' and 'The Clouds Don't Come' are brilliant instances of the stream-of-consciousness technique being used to evoke an epic desolation and the uselessness of religion as a prop when faced by grinding poverty. Angarey, the book which invited one of the earliest bans on free speech in India, and a precursor of the Progressive Writers' Movement, was re-published in Urdu in 1995. Sensitively and brilliantly translated, this is the first time that the book is being published in the English language.

Yes, I will read exactly one of your examples! "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" although the Swedish Title is "Huckleberry Finns Äventyr". Hopefully I will complete the task this month, I wasn't even close in March.
I will skip a few other reading challenges in April and try to finish a couple of books I've started but not yet finished, but Huckleberry is on my night stand so that suits fine for this challenge. Besides I love this group because the atmosphere here are so warm and friendly so it's one of my favorite groups, thus I will prioritize the challenges here. <3

An impressive list, Nidhi! I’m a little confused by your choice of “The Village by the Sea” - I assume you’re using a translation? Good luck with your challenge.

That was mistake Trisha , i took the title to be A Village..., actually i have mentioned in a challenge (children's classics) as A Village By The Sea. I have to make correction there also. Thanks for pointing that out.

Nidhi reminds me that I’ve never read As I Lay Dying. The thing I enjoy the most about these groups is that I am reminded of or introduced to books that I need to read. I’m going to tackle that one next for this challenge.

I really enjoy your Swedish language posts! I find it fascinating how similar the English "adventure" and the Swedish "äventyr" are.

Many words are similar, and I think you should learn Swedish too!
Do you use Duolingo, Memrise, or Mondly?

Many English words actually comes from the Norse language (old Norwegian, Danish and Swedish) with the vikings. maybe Adventure/Äventyr is one of those =).

One thing that has really surprised me is that a lot of the Ukrainian refugees coming to Sweden now, already knows Swedish! They have studied it at the university and it's mindblowing. I watched for example an interview on the Swedish news with an Ukrainian woman who spoke Swedish fluently and with almost no accent and I became a bit annoyed when the reporter - wrongly I thought - said that she had been in Sweden for five days. I thought he meant 25 or 35 years or something, I mean she had already started making the first Ukrainian-Swedish lexicon.
But no, the reporter was right, she had actually only been in Sweden for five days but she was teaching Swedish at the university somewhere in Ukraine. After that there have been so many reports of Ukrainians who speaks Swedish and they have immediately gotten jobs at our schools so they can help teaching the many Ukrainian children Swedish. Unbelievable. I only knew that Swedish was a bit popular in Estonia. (And of course one can study Swedish in Finland since there are regions in Finland where they speak Swedish.)

Whoops, my mistake! I forgot that my other A title isn't a classic by any stretch of the definition since it was published in 2021. It might just be one book for me.
