Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Historical fiction for June 2022

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Well, I’m not going to get to this in June. Blame the Strudlhof Steps, which is much more challenging than expected. Does anyone mind rescheduling this to be Our Q3 2022 read?

kubelot | 109 comments True, Doderer is much harder then expected, Fine for me to postpone or extend.

Penelope | 167 comments Thanks Lizzy. That would work for me too.

Erin | 64 comments I definitely want to participate in this readalong, but am happy to start whenever you guys are ready. Q3, then?

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Ok, let’s do that. We’ll read this in Q3 - which in my case will be September. I suspect it’ll take me to end of July to finish Strudlhof Steps (as I’m going to get distracted by preparation for this https://www.goethe.de/ins/gb/en/ver.c... pretty soon). And then August is all things Edinburgh Book Festival Book Festival …

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments A reminder that this is the Q3 2022 read for those who are ready for it …

Penelope | 167 comments I’m in for this one. Have owned a copy for a long time and hope for a good read.

Erin | 64 comments Is it Q3 already? 😱 I'll start as soon as I finish my current German read, (Aus guter Familie) which is short so hopefully won't take too long...

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Is anyone going to read this? i’ve been delayed due to that pesky virus, but will be able to start later in the week, if anyone is in the mood for a readalong … let me know.

message 11: by Penelope (new)

Penelope | 167 comments I have started this book three times but cannot seem to get any further. Maybe a readalong would help. It’s not so much the book but my circus of a life at the moment. So yes, let’s do it.

Erin | 64 comments I've been reading it! It's been a slow read, but I'm finding it very good. GR tells me I started it August 5th, and I have just over another hundred pages to go (it's almost 500pp). I'd like to finish it before the end of September!

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Christiane wrote: "Maybe, I'm in Orhan Pamuks "Plague"-novel, not sure if I could stand the sound of the Night Train afterwards ;-)"

Slightly off topic for this board, but how is the Pamuk? I’m in a should I, should I not frame of mind …

Sonali V | 6 comments I read this book about a year ago and found it quite fascinating. There was so much philosophy in it, different points of view, surprises, that I don't think I grasped everything as completely as I would have liked to. Have been thinking of re-reading it.

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Back to Night Train to Lisbon … crikey, it’s not the book I thought it was. The blurb on the back: “Hurtling through the dark, NTTL is a rich tale, wonderfully told, propelled by the mystery at its heart”.

That kind of vocabulary suggests pace and action … well, I suppose there’s a lot of interior movement, but I wish this train would move up a gear. I could ride a bike faster!

kubelot | 109 comments just finished NTTL and i'm rather disappointed. Found it to slow and boring.

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments There’s a lot of agreement on this thread. We can’t all be wrong. 😉

My blog write-up has thoughts on the movie as well as the book.

Erin | 64 comments LOL, I guess I stand alone in liking the book! It definitely was slow, and did take me a really long time to read (about 2 months), but for some reason I didn't mind wandering around Lisbon in this guy's head. I could definitely see it wouldn't be a book for everyone! I'm kind of surprised I liked it as much as I did. Maybe it helps that I've been learning Portuguese....
But I could not get through Strudlhof Steps. Now, that was a slog (for me)!
