Encanto Challenge

Encanto features eight songs written by Pulitzer Prize wining songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda. In January 2022, the Encanto soundtrack reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200, becoming only the sixth album from an animated feature to do so.
🎶 Read a book by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. BONUS if the book you read won the prize.
🎶 Read a bestseller OR a book that is under 200 pages.
"The Family Madrigal" is the first song in the movie. It is sung by Mirabel and serves as an introduction to the characters and their powers. Miranda found inspiration in the song "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast.
🎶 Read a book where the title’s first letter (excluding A, An, & The) is found in “MADRIGAL” OR is the first in a series. Name the series.
🎶 Read a book where a character gets inspired OR is a retelling.
"Waiting on a Miracle" is sung by Mirabel. It is her "I Want" song, which is a song traditionally used in musicals where the protagonist expresses their desires. Miranda specifically wrote this song in a different time signature to symbolize how Mirabel is different rhythmically from her family.
🎶 Read a book where a character makes a wish OR feels like they don’t fit in.
🎶 Read a book that is different from the books you normally read.
"Surface Pressure" is Luisa’s song and reveals the pressure she feels of always having to be the strong one and her obligations to her family and the rest of the encanto. She sings about being able to move mountains but wonders of her worth should she ever falter. She also laments that if she could just get some relief from the crushing weight on her shoulders she just might find some peace.
🎶 Read a book where a character feels under pressure OR opens up thier feelings to another character.
🎶 Read a book where the MC needs or goes on a vacation OR that has mountain on the cover. Show the cover.
"We Don't Talk About Bruno" is an ensemble piece that has several characters discussing their interactions with the mysterious Bruno. By the end of the song, all the verses are sung at the same time creating a harmonized layer of sound. It is the film’s most popular song, reaching #1 on the Billboard Top 100, becoming only the second Disney song to do so after Aladdin’s “A Whole New World” in 1992.
🎶 Read a book that has different POVs OR has different converging storylines.
🎶 Read a book that has the numbers 1, 9, or 2 in the page count OR is the second in a series. Name the series.
"What Else Can I Do?" is sung by Isabela. After fighting with Mirabel, Isabela suddenly causes a cactus to grow. Intrigued by the notion of something sharp and imperfect, she begins experimenting with other plant life, eventually freeing herself from the need to always be perfect. She realizes she couldn’t have done it without her sister, Mirabel, and the two embrace, which seems to have a positive effect on the cracks growing in the casita.
🎶 Read a book where a character discovers a flaw in themself OR learns to do something new.
🎶 Read a book that has either a cactus or two people hugging on the cover. Show the cover.
"Dos Oruguitas" is one of two songs not sung by a character, both of which are in Spanish. It is played over a scene where Mirabel learns about what happened to Pedro and how the magic came to be. The song is a folk ballad about two inseparable caterpillars who are in love yet must part from each other so they can turn into butterflies and be together again. Miranda has stated it was the hardest one to write since he wrote it in Spanish first, instead of translating a song into Spanish from English. It has been called the emotional centerpiece of the film.
🎶 Read a book with either two people in love or a butterfly on the cover. Show the cover.
🎶 Read a book originally written in a language other than English.
"All of You" is the second song sung by the entire cast. While standing in the ruins of their beloved casita, Mirabel sings about rebuilding on a stronger foundation and how her now powerless family are more than just their gifts. It is also when Bruno is reunited with the family to joyous embraces. Suddenly, the Madrigals hear the townsfolk coming to repay them for all they have done by helping rebuild a new casita.
🎶 Read a book where a family is reunited OR a community comes together to do something.
🎶 Read a book where something (like a house) is built OR has a house on the cover. Show the cover.
"Colombia, Mi Encanto" is the other song sung in Spanish and is a love letter to Colombia. It is played twice in the film, once partially as the townsfolk arrive for Antonio’s ceremony, and again to close out the movie into the credits.
🎶 Read a book that takes place in South America OR has the name of a geographic location in the title.
🎶 Read a book where there is a celebration or party OR that is the final book in a series. Name the series.

Mirabel is the teenaged protagonist of the film. She is the only one amongst her siblings and cousins to not have a special ability. Though she may lack a power, she is proud to be a Madrigal and is set to prove she is just as special as the rest of her family. When cracks start appearing in the magical casita, Mirabel is determined to save her family and the magic that has always been there for them.

She was gifted the candle after the refugee group she was with was ambushed by armed men who killed her beloved husband, Pedro. Newly widowed with baby triplets, Alma’s grief and the power in the candle easily pushes back the soldiers and raises some mountains to make the encanto and give the refugees a safe place to live.

Part 2: The Songs
Encanto features eight songs written by Pulitzer Prize wining songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda. In January 2022, the Encanto soundtrack reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200, becoming only the sixth album from an animated feature to do so.
🎶 Read a book by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. BONUS if the book you read won the prize.
🎶 Read a bestseller OR a book that is under 200 pages. Nothing But Blackened Teeth - Cassandra Khaw (128 pgs) ✨✨✨✨
"The Family Madrigal" is the first song in the movie. It is sung by Mirabel and serves as an introduction to the characters and their powers. Miranda found inspiration in the song "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast.
🎶 Read a book where the title’s first letter (excluding A, An, & The) is found in “MADRIGAL” Good Girl, Bad Blood - Holly Jackson ✨✨✨✨
🎶 Read a book where a character feels like they don’t fit in. Broken - Jenny Lawson ✨✨✨
The Final Gambit - Jennifer Lynn Barnes ✨✨✨✨ 9/17
🎶 Read a book that has the numbers 1, 9, or 2 in the page count . Lord of the Flies - William Golding ✨✨✨✨
The One - John Marrs ✨✨✨✨

🔆Read a book that won an award. Tell us the award.
🔆Read a book tagged Magical Realism or Fantasy.
Part 1: The Characters
Mirabel is the teenaged protagonist of the film. She is the only one amongst her siblings and cousins to not have a special ability. Though she may lack a power, she is proud to be a Madrigal and is set to prove she is just as special as the rest of her family. When cracks start appearing in the magical casita, Mirabel is determined to save her family and the magic that has always been there for them.
🔆 Read a book where the MC goes on a quest OR is powerless in some way.
🔆 Read a book where the MC is a teenager OR wears glasses.
Abuela Alma is Mirabel’s grandmother and the matriarch of the Madrigal family. She does not have a special ability, but is the keeper of the special candle that gives the family its magic.
🔆 Read a book where there is a family matriarch OR where the MC is a grandparent.
🔆 Read a book where the MC loses a loved one OR where there are characters who are multiples (twins, triplets, etc).
Julieta & Agustín are Mirabel’s parents. Julieta has the ability to heal with the food she makes, which makes her a good match for Agustín, who is severely accident prone. They are proud of their daughter and just want her to be happy.
🔆 Read a book where there is a healer (doctor or magic) or a cook OR has food on cover. Show the cover.
🔆 Read a book where a character has an accident OR needs healing of some kind.
Isabela & Luisa are Mirabel’s older sisters. Isabela is the oldest and has the ability to make plants grow and flowers bloom. She is described by Mirabel as being "effortlessly perfect" and shows both beauty and grace with every action. Luisa is the middle sister. Her gift is super strength. She is often called upon by the people in the village to assist with the heavy lifting and corralling donkeys. Both sisters, however have secrets and things are not quite as they seem.
🔆 Read a book where a character gives or receives flowers OR has flowers on the cover. Show the cover.
🔆 Read a book with a female MC who can be described as "strong" OR where the MC has a sister.
Pepa & Félix are Mirabel’s aunt and uncle. Tía Pepa has the ability to affect the weather with her emotions. Unfortunately, Pepa has some very strong emotions that often can cause violent storms, as we learn happened on their wedding day. Luckily, Félix is there to help calm her down and always has an umbrella to shelter Pepa from her storms.
🔆 Read a book where a character has strong emotions OR weather plays a part in the story OR there is weather on the cover. Show the cover.
🔆 Read a book where someone gets married OR a character carries an umbrella.
Dolores, Camilo, & Antonio are Mirabel’s cousins. Dolores has the gift of super hearing. She hears everything that goes on in the casita and the village. No secret is safe. Camilo is a shapeshifter who can imitate any person he chooses. He is also the comic relief and often uses his ability to get a laugh. Antonio is the youngest Madrigal who has just reached the age where he is given his ability. He is described as "an animal guy" and this manifests his gift as the ability to communicate with animals.
🔆 Read a book where a character hears something they shouldn’t OR the MC has a brother.
🔆 Read a book tagged Humor OR with a character who wears disguise or pretends to be someone else.
🔆 Read a “coming of age” book OR a book with a talking animal OR has an animal on the cover. Show the cover.
Bruno is Mirabel’s estranged uncle who has the ability of prophesy. When using his gift, his eyes glow an eerie color of green. At the start of the film Bruno has been missing for ten years, but is later revealed to have been hiding in the walls of the casita with his rat friends. He loves his family, but has hidden himself away to save them, and especially Mirabel, from a particularly bad prophesy.
🔆 Read a book with a prophesy in it OR that has a green cover. Show the cover.
🔆 Read a book where something is hidden OR where a character has been missing for years.

Abuela Alma is Mirabel’s grandmother and the matriarch of the Madrigal family. She does not have a special ability, but is the keeper of the special candle that gives the family its magic.

Luckily, Félix is there to help calm her down and always has an umbrella to shelter Pepa from her storms.

At the start of the film Bruno has been missing for ten years, but is later revealed to have been hiding in the walls of the casita with his rat friends. He loves his family, but has hidden himself away to save them, and especially Mirabel, from a particularly bad prophesy.
