Anna | 1 comments Are there any purposes for which it is legal to scrape goodreads? E.g. academic.
There are many tools for scraping goodreads, lots of discussions around it, but I am not clear about what stance the platform has on the matter. Esp. now since the API is being depracated.
Thanks in advance for clarifications.

Graeme Williams | 1 comments A Federal Appeals Court just reaffirmed a previous decision that web scraping *in one particular case* was legal, or at least not criminal. This was based on a Supreme Court decision that you could scrape data from public web sites. Here are more details: https://techcrunch.com/2022/04/18/web...

I am not a lawyer, and a lawyer wouldn't give you a yes or no answer anyway, but it seems unlikely that scraping would be *criminal*.

Goodreads -- or any other site you scraped -- could still sue you for some other reason, such as a copyright violation or if your scraping affected service.

I've personally done a small research project using Goodreads data. If you have an academic purpose for extracting data from Goodreads, I'm happy to discuss it offline -- and I have an API key which I think is still working.
