Caroline | 33 comments Hello everyone, I am looking for a YA book I read sometime between 2005 and 2010. It was a Young Adult Science Fiction / Fantasy book. In this futuristic society, wealthy parents have the option to genetically modify their children before they are born. Some parents chose to change their looks, some chose to change their IQ, some chose both. In this book the MMC had parents who chose to change his looks. I think, if I am remembering right, that he was modified to look like James Dean (or some really famous old school male actor). The FMC, who I'm pretty sure was named Violet, came from a less wealthy family. She was not genetically modified before birth. I am almost positive she had blonde hair. Also, she was naturally very smart and liked to read. I'm pretty sure it was just her and her father. I don't think her mother was alive / in the book at all. They were both high school aged and the MMC was popular, while the FMC was a loner.

The book itself had, I think, a primarily light blue cover. I think that space travel was commonplace in this futuristic world. I do not recall any non-human characters.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Caroline | 33 comments Remembered something: when the two main characters meet the FMC is sitting at a table and reading. I *think* that the MMC comes in (to a diner or restaurant/cafe?) with a group of friends and for whatever reason decides to talk to her.

I also recall that at some point during the book the girl talks to him about how odd she finds it that people, like his parents, choose to change their offspring’s appearance before they’re born. I remember that after this conversation he goes home and asks his parents why they did it and they’re answer doesn’t satisfy him. I think they might say something along the lines of “we could, so we did.”
