Don't Fear the Reaper (The Lake Witch Trilogy, #2) by Stephen Graham Jones

I loved My Heart is a Chainsaw by SGJ and I was soooo excited when I found out he was making it a trilogy. This is the second book and it is due for release in Sept 2022 but I've also seen some rumors that it may not be out until 2023. Whenever it comes out, it will be mine!!!

Honestly I was pumped about Jade's excitement and passion for slasher flicks. I thought she was such a spitfire I just really enjoyed reading her perspective. I have seen a lot of people felt the same way you did about it, though. It was one of those love it or hate it books.

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments The Book Of Counted Sorrows Poetry by Dean Koontz isn't coming out again this year that I'm aware of, but I believe it's only been released in special limited editions & goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay. It's the one I'm always hoping will get re-printed in an affordable way, so I can own it & read it.

I'll keep my eyes open Ian, I love thrift stores and flea markets. You never know when you'll find something that somebody didn't realize they shouldn't get rid of. I feel like that's the only way we'll ever get our hands on this one (without spending an entire tax return). If I find 2 I'll send you one! :)

You are the best! I think a yard (garage) sale is our only chance because they probably won't look it up. ha ha

message 8: by Alia (new)

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments Uh, I am biting my nails on three. The first two are fantasy.

The last book of The Masquerade Series by Seth Dickinson

The two pending trilogies to complete of the Malazan Series by Steven Erikson

The last one is... just... agh! I got the book Infected by Scott Sigler, read it about 2017-2018, liked it and then bought the second book of the trilogy, the third was out of stock. So I waited like a year, found one not very cheap copy and waited to arrive, but it never did. This happened 2 more times. The book was sent from different sellers and got lost in the way. At last, at the end of 2021 I got one copy that was only available in the US. Sooooo, I bought it, get it delivered in to my sister in law´s house (she recently went to live there while my brother comes and goes) and yes! It was delivered, but my brother has forgotten to bring it in his last trips. So, the book has an extremely annoying elusive magic and now I am expecting it to be the-best-book-ever-written-perhaps-gold-leafed-inside.
End of story hahaha

message 9: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments That is quite the trip for a little book to make. Where do you live that books are being waylaid in transit?

message 10: by Alia (new)

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments I live in the postal-office-Bermuda-triangle named México hahahaha, I had spent my life with a Zen approach to sending/receiving stuff, like: it is very likely to be lost, but it is the way of detachment.... hahaha. The last several years it got better management and everything was mostly fine but then with the pandemic it was a mess again, but this started before, so... maybe goblins?

message 11: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments The pandemic did break a lot of stuff and reveal just how bad a bunch of other stuff was. Inevitable. Well I hope they figure it out again.

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments Yeah, also kicked off the dust that hid a lot of cracks in things we never thought about. Let´s always hope for the better.

I have a couple of books I am keeping my eye on. I have been reading the crime thriller series Jack Daniels by J.A. Konrath and he has two more books coming out that feature Jack Daniels. They are on pre-order over on Amazon.

Book #15 will be out in July which is this one: Bite Force and then he has another one which will be book #16 in the series and it is coming in January of 2023 which is called Jack Rose but it doesn't have a link yet though Amazon does have it displayed - there is just no link on here yet.

I have been slowly working my way through them but supposedly the one I just finished reading was suppose to be the "last" book in the series, but I guess readers wanted more (lol) and now he is writing more! I freaked when I saw books #15 and #16 so "yay" more of Jack! :)

Do you remember where you stopped on the series, Nancy?

message 28: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 217 comments I would love it if the Malazan Book of the Fallen was reprinted in a hardcover set. The paperbacks available aren't the size, art style or format. My OCD would go crazy. The hardcovers are rare enough to price me out even if i can find them.

I am aware of the recent Subterranean Press leather bound release. Between the "limited edition" sale and probably scalpers, I'll never see them.

I know the series is niche and publishers want to be sure they make money

Maybe Tor can have a preorder option on their site. Or even a kickstater. Take my money!

I'll get off my soapbox now.

I'm reading the Malazan series for the first time. Recently finished book six and starting book seven at the end of May.

It's a brilliant series. Love Erikson's story telling, just huge weaves of threads that all fit together.

I wholeheartedly agree. I have a few mismatched paperpacks and some ebooks. It's crazy/brilliant how he wrote this. What seems like a thousand characters, on multiple continents, over thousands of years, all woven together. Mindblowing really.

message 31: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 1259 comments Yeah, I find his whole magic system (warrens and holds) and the structure of the pantheon, plus ascendants, soletaken and divers very innovative.

It's a very open narrative framework that allows him to add or subtract 'characters,' at will without introducing deus ex machina events (which I hate) - so, he has a solution where events almost don't need explanation, and he carries it off - which is quite astonishing to witness.

He's one of the most skillful authors I've read. The only other person who comes to mind is Zelazny, but for a different reason. (Zelazny packs narrative in tight, economical prose).

message 32: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 1259 comments For story scope, he's up there with Tolkien and Feist.

message 33: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 217 comments Yes! Things just happen and you either understand why or forgot who that person was anyway. haha.

The Deck of Dragons was a smart spin on tarot cards too.

i assuse you are referring to Lord of Light Zelazny. I haven't read that one yet. Sci-fi isn't my favorite but if he's that good, I'll check it out.

message 34: by Alia (new)

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments I feel you with the Malazan paperbacks available. I did get the series in a bigger, nicer format in spanish, but the publisher broke midway and after years some ramification of Penguin took the series and launched a beautiful set of hardcover, nice size books, I was delighted until I read them... I never ever dropped a book on page 60 because the translation is so bad that you want to cry. Sigh.

A detail I discovered on a second reading is that it is very rewarding on reread too. Nothing beats reading those books and discovering for the first time, but the reread is wicked!

message 35: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 217 comments Too bad with that translation issue. You finally get a nice set only for it to be unreadable.

I think you're onto something with the rereads. There is so much going on, a reread should be recommended.

message 36: by aza (new)

aza (asza) I'm excited for the 3rd book of two different trilogies!

The Hourglass Throne comes out this month I'm so excited!!

Nona the Ninth though I'm confused on whether or not it's still coming out this year :(

message 37: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 217 comments I am too! They are all must-buy books.

message 38: by Alia (new)

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments @Kevin: yeah, it was a bummer! and shocking, I thought Penguin were more pros.
Oh, I cant recommend enough a reread! You get to appreciate more details, discover new depths of pain (lol, but yeah) and overall the characters and the plot have a whole new dimension.

@aza: Isnt Nona comming at the end of the year?

you're right! I got them switched around. Originally Alecto was supposed to come out this year as the ending to the trilogy but Nona is coming out this year instead and Alecto was pushed back!

Just had a quick chat with Adam Cesare on his YT channel...Reaper has now been pushed to February 2023. Maybe the publishers didn´t want three slasher books (Reaper, Clown 2 and Daphne) to compete...or maybe the possibilty that Stephen Graham Jones wins 4 Bram Stoker Awards in 3 years is a bit too much :-D He won with The Only Good Indians and Night of the Mannequins last year and now Chainsaw is nominated and I´m pretty sure he will win again...readers and critics both loved it!

Ugh dammit! But let's be honest, I wouldn't have time to read it until 2023 anyway. I like Adam Cesare, he seems like a cool guy. I still haven't even read Clown in a Cornfield but I've been following him on tiktok for a long time. Thanks for the update!

I first discovered Adam Cesare through YT and his movie reviews, didn't know he was a writer in the beginning ;) He does a great job there and I really enjoyed Clown 1, so part 2 is already preordered:)
